Caught in the Act!
John 8:1-11

As we get back into the gospel of John, we come to chapter 8 which is the story of a person who is caught in the very act of a sin; to be specific, adultery. It could have been the worst day of her life; instead, it turns out to be one of her best.
Perhaps you’ve read stories of people that have been caught in the act; we know that it often doesn’t end well.
There was a guy who was a real rebel and punk in the 80’s. He used his old beat-up car to often ram people’s garbage cans. One day, someone filled his two garbage cans with cement. Goodbye car… and caught!
There was also a student who was using his phone to cheat on his Spanish test. He used Google translate, but forgot to mute the phone. So, Google loudly gave him the answer for the whole class to hear.
There are some “Caught in the Act” moments we can laugh over after the fact, but others have real, serious consequences.
In John chapter 8, the Jewish leaders used this woman caught in the act as an opportunity to trap Jesus. You know right away they’re not trying to uphold the Jewish law because they only bring the woman. If she was caught in the act, then they also had the man, but maybe he was well connected with the leaders.
Their trap is set so that if Jesus says that the woman should not be stoned, He would be defying the Law of Moses, and Jesus did say that He did not come to nullify the law, but uphold it. If Jesus says that the woman is to be stoned, He would be the defying the Roman law, and acting contrary to His proclaimed mission to not condemn, but to seek and save the lost.
Her act could potentially have grave consequences for her and Jesus.
Instead of being caught in their trap, Jesus turns the table on them and they walk away humiliated and defeated. But the glory of the story is really about the amazing forgiveness and restoration of God.
These are critical verses, because we have all been in a place of sin. Maybe not adultery, but nevertheless experiencing condemnation, being guilty. How does God respond to this? What is His heart?
The beauty of the story is really about the amazing forgiveness and restoration of God.
I. It’s not Worth It
- There are two components to this story that we are going to look at. The woman and the Jewish leaders.
- This woman is in fact caught in the act of adultery and there is actually much to learn from her story, especially when you see the grace of God when Jesus refuses to condemn her.
A. Don’t even consider this sin!
- This problem unfortunately flows from a deep culture of sexual promiscuity we have today.
- Unfortunately, adultery and casual sexual encounters have become the norm in our society.
- The problem is that the world makes it seem so appealing. But we should not define our character and actions by the world around us. This is what the whole letter to the Corinthians was about.
Illus – I spoke with a father of a teenage daughter a few weeks ago. We discussed how difficult it is to guide girls these days, what to allow, what to keep them away from. Because not only are boys bombarded with all the sexual temptations in every area, but the girls are also bombarded with what today is the sexual norm and what is ‘expected’ of them so they will be accepted. Take prom night, for example…
- This world view does not stop there, though. It sets the stage for the rest of people’s lives, searing the conscience which opens them up to more casual sexual encounters, which eventually can also lead to adultery being common practice which destroys the soul.
Illus – I spoke with a lady over the phone the other day who are not from our church, older and divorced. She wanted guidance on dating and finding the right man…
- What is God’s view and the Word’s directive on this?
- First of all, if you’ve ever done this sin and have been forgiven and restored, I know what you would want me to say, “Tell everyone that it’s not worth it! Don’t do it!”
- God was so serious about warning people of the destructive power of this sin, that it was one of the few that carried the penalty of death.
- When we come to Christ, we cannot be aligned with the world’s views, we should define our character and path by God’s Word.
Proverbs 12:15, The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel.
- When we speak specifically of adultery, another problem is that it’s the ultimate selfishness. There’s nothing honorable or caring about it; it’s all about selfish desire.
Philippians 2:3, Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit…
- Another problem is that it’s based on blindness. A person in this sin or considering this sin is deluded by their own thinking.
Proverbs 9:16-18, “Whoever is naïve, let him turn in here,” and to him who lacks understanding she says, “Stolen water is sweet; and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.” But he does not know that the dead are there; that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.
- When we say, “Don’t even consider this sin,” it means, don’t even think about it. The mind is the ground upon which the seeds of sin are sown.
- Be careful what you let in through your senses into your soul. Many watch movies or shows and say, I know it is wrong, but it doesn’t impact me. Unfortunately, the seeds are sown and if you consider and think on it, it germinates and starts to grow.
Illus – There is a principle of teaching through stories that Hollywood has latched on to. Jesus used it for good with His parables. The enemy uses it for evil. By telling stories, they bypass your critical thinking filters as you are emotionally drawn into the situation, placing yourself in the shoes of whatever you are seeing. Because it stirs the emotion, the mind puts itself in the situation as it is dealing with the emotional response.
James 1:14-15, But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.
1 Timothy 1:19, Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, they have suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith.
- ‘Cling to your faith’ is wisdom from God. Don’t violate your conscience.
B. This sin is extremely destructive
- The problem with adultery and sexual sin, is that it seems to numb people from seeing the future heartache that will come from it. They cannot see past the instant gratification.
Illus – In the Old Testament there is the story of Jacob and Esau. Though these boys were twins, Esau was born first and therefore owned the birthright. One day Esau came in from the field and was famished. Jacob had prepared a red stew and Esau asked for it, but Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.”
- Everyone reading the story would have shouted at Esau, “It’s not worth it!” But at the moment all he could see was what he wanted, yet it came at a great cost. The same applies to the sin of adultery.
- I’ve applied that story in many different ways and have asked myself, “Am I being offered Jacob’s stew; a moment’s pleasure for a lifetime of pain?”
Illus – There once was a businessman that gave his warning/testimony…
- It damages your spouse. When you’re married, two become one and if you become one with someone else, it will absolutely damage your spouse. It wrecks trust, and intimacy. And if you think the person you are having the affair with will be a better spouse, you are deeply mistaken, because it starts off on a foundation of distrust and unfaithfulness.
- That’s why there’s a release clause by Jesus in Matthew 19. It is grounds for divorce, but it’s important to remember that when there is true humility and repentance, it’s also grounds for forgiveness.
- It damages you. It is a sin that affects every area of your life because it’s not just one sin, other sins go with it. There is lying and cover-up, living a secret life, which in the offset might look like it gives freedom and is exciting, but then it starts to strangle life out of you and what you thought was just a care-free fling, becomes a complicated trap of death.
- Character is compromised, a pattern develops and it permeates every area of your life.
- Sometimes people say to themselves, “Well I’ll just do it; God will forgive me later.” Frankly, that is a very foolish perspective. Sin has its own penalty built in.
Galatians 6:7-8, Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
- It damages your children. This is truly a tragic aspect of this sin. Your position in their lives is undermined; their trust in you has been damaged. It sets them up with future trust issues, struggling to trust the marriage covenant or their spouse.
- A word of hope for children that came from a broken home impacted by this. Your parents’ story don’t have to be your story. God can redeem and restore. See it for what it is. The plan of the enemy is to kill and destroy, to impact future generations with brokenness. You can say, by the grace of God, it stops with me.
- Lastly, and most importantly, this is a sin against the Lord; the one who purchased you with His own blood. When Joseph was being pressured by Potiphar’s wife, he responded with great wisdom.
Genesis 39:9-10, “How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?” As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her or be with her.
- By the way, run from it. Do not hang out in places where you are opening yourself up to temptation.
C. Deal with it
- Concerning adultery, temptation has a much better success rate if there are problems in the marriage. When unity is broken, when there are niggles and grudges, when communication breaks down. When the busyness of life smothers the romance, when respect and honoring one another walks out the door.
- The answer is not just exercising better self-control, the answer is to address the issues in humility and a heart of forgiveness from both sides.
- Rekindle the romance. Connect deeply. Stay in unity in and with God. Don’t give the enemy a foothold.
II. We Need the Heart of Jesus
- The story then turns to the conversation between Jesus and the Jewish leaders.
- What follows is nothing short of amazing. Jesus confronts the Jewish leaders with their own hypocrisy and defeats them with their own trap.
A. We need the heart of Jesus toward others
- If you know someone is caught in a sin, how should you respond?
- Unfortunately, there are some who take on the attitude of the Jewish leaders and become the self-appointed righteousness police.
- The problem is that they often come with condemnation and apply the scriptures as if we were living under the Old Testament law. They lack the heart of Christ which is mercy and grace and calling people to repentance through love and the kindness of God’s forgiveness.
Romans 2:4, Do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?
- The scriptures tell us that we need a spirit of meekness toward others and that the heart of God is to restore our brother.
Galatians 6:1, Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
- When they first brought this woman to Jesus and pressed Jesus to answer their question, He stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.
- What did He write? Many have guessed, but we don’t know.
- Possibly Jesus was writing down the ten commandments, or the sins of those accusing her, pointing out their hypocrisy. Revealing their sin as they revealed hers.
- When they pressed Him further, He responded, “Let him who has no sin cast the first stone.”
- One by one they dropped their stones and walked away. When they were confronted with their own sin, they had to bow their heads in shame.
B. We need the heart of Jesus for ourselves
- When they had all gone away, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” And she answered, “No one, Lord.”
- The law required there to be two witnesses for someone to be found guilty, and the witnesses had to partake in the stoning. Yet no one was left.
- Then He said, “Neither do I condemn you; go your way and sin no more.”
- First of all, He called her “woman.” This is the same word he used when speaking to His mother. It’s a term of respect. Amazing.
- What other names could He have called her? I’m not going to repeat them. Are we defined by our sin? Liar, murderer, adulterer, or alcoholic?
- Jesus saw her from a different perspective. Did He look at her and see her when she was a little girl, playing with her dolls, innocence looking at the world with wide eyed wonder? There would have been something beautiful about her purity and innocence.
- At some point, the woman of our story grew up and began to blossom, perhaps she began to find her value in being desirable, giving herself to men, looking for love and acceptance, but feeling emptier every time. There was a time when her heart began to harden and finally, she became accustomed to giving herself away.
- But now, here before her, was the Messiah, and having intimidated her accusers, he said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way and sin no more.”
- I think what changed this woman’s life, was when she looked into Jesus’ eyes and saw His love, kindness, grace, and compassion. Maybe she saw the hurt in his eyes, the sorrow of what sin was doing to the beautiful person He created.
- Maybe she, in that moment of conviction understood and saw the destruction and death sin was bringing in her life. Maybe she saw in His eyes the new life, love and acceptance that really defines her, not the empty lust of others she has given herself to.
- Then Jesus says, go and sin no more. Now we know that we don’t become totally sinless when we are saved. Not understanding this right can be a stronghold of condemnation the enemy uses.
- The context is this. You have been forgiven. You have been set free. Do not continue to give yourself to this sin that produces death. Choose to habitually stay on the path of righteousness and honor.
- There are things you have to let go. Be done with it. Do not be sorry because you were caught, be sorry because you want to be done with this thing.
- On what level does this story connect with you? Are you caught up in this same sin? Repent of it; give it up because it will destroy everything you hold dear.
- Are you considering it? Dreaming of it? And there are so many other sins very much like it.
- Please note that God loves you and is trying to save you from damaging your life.

- Many people think God is like Santa Claus, making a list, checking it twice. Will I bless him or condemn him?
- God is a Father, Jesus is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit is in us to walk with us the road to victory, not death. You are accepted in the Beloved, now walk in that.
Romans 8:1, Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.

8 1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 Early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people were coming to Him; and He sat down and began to teach them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees *brought a woman caught in adultery, and having set her in the center of the court, 4 they *said to Him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in adultery, in the very act. 5 Now in the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?” 6 They were saying this, testing Him, so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground. 7 But when they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up, and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. 9 When they heard it, they began to go out one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman, where she was, in the center of the court. 10 Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.”]
¡Atrapado en el acto!

Al regresar al evangelio de Juan, llegamos al capítulo 8, que es la historia de una persona que es atrapada en el acto mismo de un pecado; para ser específicos, el adulterio. Podría haber sido el peor día de su vida; En cambio, resulta ser uno de los mejores.
Tal vez hayas leído historias de personas que han sido atrapadas en el acto; sabemos que muchas veces no termina bien.
Había un tipo que era un verdadero rebelde y ‘punk’ en los 80. Usaba su viejo auto destartalado para a menudo descargar los botes de basura de la gente. Un día, alguien llenó sus dos botes de basura con cemento. Adiós coche… ¡Y atrapado!
También había un estudiante que estaba usando su teléfono para hacer trampa en su examen de español. Usó el traductor de Google, pero olvidó silenciar el teléfono. Entonces, Google le dio en voz alta la respuesta para que toda la clase la escuchara.
Hay algunos momentos de “atrapado en el acto” de los que podemos reírnos después del hecho, pero otros tienen consecuencias reales y serias.
En el capítulo 8 de Juan, los líderes judíos usaron a esta mujer sorprendida en el acto como una oportunidad para atrapar a Jesús. Sabes de inmediato que no están tratando de defender la ley judía porque solo traen a la mujer. Si ella fue atrapada en el acto, entonces también tenían al hombre, pero tal vez estaba bien conectado con los líderes.
Su trampa está tendida de tal manera que si Jesús dice que la mujer no debe ser apedreada, estaría desafiando la Ley de Moisés, y Jesús dijo que no vino a anular la ley, sino a defenderla. Si Jesús dice que la mujer debe ser apedreada, estaría desafiando la ley romana y actuando en contra de su misión proclamada de no condenar, sino de buscar y salvar a los perdidos.
Su acto podría tener graves consecuencias para ella y para Jesús.
En lugar de caer en su trampa, Jesús les da la ‘vuelta a la tortilla’ y se marchan humillados y derrotados. Pero la gloria de la historia es realmente acerca del asombroso perdón y la restauración de Dios.
Estos son versículos críticos, porque todos hemos estado en un lugar de pecado. Tal vez no el adulterio, pero sin embargo experimentar la condenación, ser culpable. ¿Cómo responde Dios a esto? ¿Cuál es Su corazón?
La belleza de la historia es realmente sobre el asombroso perdón y la restauración de Dios.
- No vale la pena
- Hay dos componentes en esta historia que vamos a ver. La mujer y los líderes judíos.
- De hecho, esta mujer está atrapada en el acto de adulterio y en realidad hay mucho que aprender de su historia, especialmente cuando ves la gracia de Dios cuando Jesús se niega a condenarla.
- ¡Ni siquiera consideres este pecado!
- Este problema, por desgracia, se deriva de una profunda cultura de promiscuidad sexual que tenemos hoy en día.
- Desafortunadamente, el adulterio y los encuentros sexuales casuales se han convertido en la norma en nuestra sociedad.
- El problema es que el mundo lo hace parecer tan atractivo. Pero no debemos definir nuestro carácter y nuestras acciones de acuerdo al mundo que nos rodea. De esto se trataba toda la carta a los corintios.
Illus – Hablé con el padre de una hija adolescente hace unas semanas. Hablamos de lo difícil que es guiar a las niñas en estos días, qué permitir, de qué mantenerlas alejadas. Porque no solo los niños son bombardeados con todas las tentaciones sexuales en todas las áreas, sino que las niñas también son bombardeadas con lo que hoy es la norma sexual y lo que se “espera” de ellas para que sean aceptadas. Por ejemplo, la noche de graduación…
- Sin embargo, esta visión del mundo no se detiene ahí. Prepara el escenario para el resto de la vida de las personas, ‘cicatrizar’ la conciencia que las abre a encuentros sexuales más casuales, que eventualmente también pueden llevar a que el adulterio sea una práctica común que destruye el alma.
El otro día hablé con una señora por teléfono que no es de nuestra iglesia, es mayor y está divorciada. Quería orientación sobre cómo salir con alguien y encontrar al hombre adecuado…
- ¿Cuál es el punto de vista de Dios y la directriz de la Palabra al respecto?
- En primer lugar, si alguna vez has cometido este pecado y has sido perdonado y restaurado, sé lo que querrías que dijera: “¡Dile a todos que no vale la pena! ¡No lo hagas!”
- Dios era tan serio en advertir a la gente del poder destructivo de este pecado, que era uno de los pocos que conllevaba la pena de muerte.
- Cuando venimos a Cristo, no podemos estar alineados con los puntos de vista del mundo, debemos definir nuestro carácter y caminar por la Palabra de Dios.

15 El camino del necio es recto a sus propios ojos, Pero el que escucha consejos es sabio.
- Cuando hablamos específicamente del adulterio, otro problema es que es el máximo egoísmo. No hay nada honorable o que le importe; se trata de un deseo egoísta.
Filipenses 2:3 Nueva Biblia de las Américas
3 No hagan nada por egoísmo o por vanagloria, sino que con actitud humilde cada uno de ustedes considere al otro como más importante que a sí mismo.
- Otro problema es que se basa en la ceguera. Una persona en este pecado o considerando este pecado es engañada por su propio pensamiento.
Proverbios 9:16-18 Nueva Biblia de las Américas 16 «El que sea simple, que entre aquí». Y al falto de entendimiento, le dice: 17 «Dulces son las aguas hurtadas, Y el pan comido en secreto es sabroso». 18 Pero él no sabe que allí están los muertos, que sus invitados están en las profundidades del Seol.
- Cuando decimos: “Ni siquiera consideres este pecado”, significa que ni siquiera pienses en ello. La mente es la base sobre la cual se siembran las semillas del pecado.
- Ten cuidado con lo que dejas entrar a través de tus sentidos en tu alma. Muchos ven películas o programas y dicen: “Sé que está mal, pero no me afecta”. Desafortunadamente, las semillas se siembran y si lo consideras y lo piensas, germina y comienza a crecer.
Hay un principio de enseñanza a través de historias al que Hollywood se ha aferrado. Jesús lo usó para bien con sus parábolas. El enemigo lo usa para el mal. Al contar historias, eluden tus filtros de pensamiento crítico a medida que te involucras emocionalmente en la situación, poniéndote en los zapatos de lo que sea que estés viendo. Debido a que agita la emoción, la mente se pone en la situación mientras lidia con la respuesta emocional.
Santiago 1:14-15 Nueva Biblia de las Américas 14 Sino que cada uno es tentado cuando es llevado y seducido por su propia pasión. 15 Después, cuando la pasión ha concebido, da a luz el pecado; y cuando el pecado es consumado, engendra la muerte.
1 Timoteo 1:19,
“19 Aférrate a tu fe en Cristo y mantén limpia tu conciencia. Pues algunas personas desobedecieron a propósito lo que les dictaba su conciencia y, como resultado, su fe naufragó..”
- ‘Aférrate a tu fe’ es la sabiduría de Dios. No violes tu conciencia.
- Este pecado es extremadamente destructivo
- El problema con el adulterio y el pecado sexual es que parece adormecer a las personas para que no vean la angustia futura que vendrá de ellos. No pueden ver más allá de la gratificación instantánea.
En el Antiguo Testamento se encuentra la historia de Jacob y Esaú. Aunque estos niños eran gemelos, Esaú nació primero y, por lo tanto, poseía la primogenitura. Un día Esaú llegó del campo y se quedó hambriento. Jacob había preparado un guiso rojo y Esaú se lo pidió, pero Jacob dijo: “Véndeme primero tu primogenitura”.
- Todos los que leyeron la historia le habrían gritado a Esaú: “¡No vale la pena!” Pero en ese momento todo lo que podía ver era lo que quería, pero tuvo un gran costo. Lo mismo se aplica al pecado de adulterio.
- He aplicado esa historia de muchas maneras diferentes y me he preguntado: “¿Me están ofreciendo el guiso de Jacob; ¿Un momento de placer por toda una vida de dolor?
ILLUS – Había una vez un hombre de negocios que dio su advertencia/testimonio…
- Daña a su cónyuge. Cuando estás casado, dos se convierten en uno y si te conviertes en uno con otra persona, dañará absolutamente a tu cónyuge. Destruye la confianza y la intimidad. Y si crees que la persona con la que estás teniendo la aventura será un mejor cónyuge, estás profundamente equivocado, porque comienza sobre una base de desconfianza e infidelidad.
- Es por eso que hay una cláusula de liberación de Jesús en Mateo 19. Es motivo para el divorcio, pero es importante recordar que cuando hay verdadera humildad y arrepentimiento, también es motivo para el perdón.
- Te daña. Es un pecado que afecta todas las áreas de tu vida porque no es solo un pecado, otros pecados lo acompañan. Hay mentiras y encubrimientos, vivir una vida secreta, que en el ‘offset’ podría parecer que da libertad y es emocionante, pero luego comienza a estrangular la vida de ti y lo que pensabas que era solo una aventura despreocupada, se convierte en una complicada trampa de muerte.
- El carácter se ve comprometido, se desarrolla un patrón que impregna todas las áreas de tu vida.
- A veces la gente se dice a sí misma: “Bueno, simplemente lo haré; Dios me perdonará más tarde”. Francamente, esa es una perspectiva muy tonta. El pecado tiene su propio castigo incorporado.
Gálatas 6:7-8, “No os engañéis, Dios no puede ser burlado; Porque todo lo que el hombre siembra, eso también segará. Porque el que siembra para su propia carne, de la carne segará corrupción, pero el que siembra para el Espíritu, del Espíritu segará vida eterna.”
- Daña a sus hijos. Este es verdaderamente un aspecto trágico de este pecado. Tu posición en sus vidas se ve destruida; Su confianza en ti ha sido dañada. Los prepara con futuros problemas de confianza, luchando por confiar en el pacto matrimonial o en su cónyuge.
- Una palabra de esperanza para los niños que vinieron de un hogar roto impactado por esto. La historia de tus padres no tiene por qué ser tu historia. Dios puede redimir y restaurar. Véalo por lo que es. El plan del enemigo es matar y destruir, impactar a las generaciones futuras con quebrantamiento. Se puede decir, por la gracia de Dios, que se detiene conmigo.
- Por último, y lo más importante, este es un pecado contra el Señor; el que te compró con Su propia sangre. Cuando José estaba siendo presionado por la esposa de Potifar, él respondió con gran sabiduría.
Génesis 39:9-10, “¿Cómo, pues, podría yo hacer este gran mal y pecar contra Dios?” Mientras ella hablaba con José día tras día, él no la escuchaba ni estaba con ella.”
- Por cierto, huye de él. No salgas en lugares donde te estés abriendo a la tentación.
- Enfréntate a ello
- En cuanto al adulterio, la tentación tiene una tasa de éxito mucho mejor si hay problemas en el matrimonio. Cuando se rompe la unidad, cuando hay rencores y resentimientos, cuando se rompe la comunicación. Cuando el ajetreo de la vida sofoca el romance, cuando el respeto y el honor mutuo salen por la puerta.
- La respuesta no es sólo ejercer un mejor autocontrol, la respuesta es abordar los problemas con humildad y un corazón de perdón de ambas partes.
- Reaviva el romance. Conéctate profundamente. Permanezcan en unidad en y con Dios. No le des al enemigo un punto de apoyo.
- Necesitamos el Corazón de Jesús
- A continuación, la historia se centra en la conversación entre Jesús y los líderes judíos.
- Lo que sigue es nada menos que asombroso. Jesús confronta a los líderes judíos con su propia hipocresía y los derrota con su propia trampa.
- Necesitamos el corazón de Jesús hacia los demás
- Si sabes que alguien está atrapado en un pecado, ¿cómo debes responder?
- Desafortunadamente, hay algunos que asumen la actitud de los líderes judíos y se convierten en la autoproclamada policía de la justicia.
- El problema es que a menudo vienen con condenación y aplican las Escrituras como si estuviéramos viviendo bajo la ley del Antiguo Testamento. Les falta el corazón de Cristo, que es misericordia y gracia y llama a las personas al arrepentimiento a través del amor y la bondad del perdón de Dios.
Romanos 2:4, “¿Piensas con ligereza en las riquezas de su bondad, tolerancia y paciencia, sin saber que la bondad de Dios te lleva al arrepentimiento?”
- Las Escrituras nos dicen que necesitamos un espíritu de mansedumbre hacia los demás y que el corazón de Dios es restaurar a nuestro hermano.
Gálatas 6:1, “Hermanos y hermanas, si alguien es sorprendido en un pecado, ustedes que viven por el Espíritu deben restaurar a esa persona con mansedumbre. Pero cuídense a sí mismos, no sea que ustedes también sean tentados.”
- Cuando primero trajeron a esta mujer a Jesús y presionaron a Jesús para que respondiera a su pregunta, Él se inclinó y con su dedo escribió en el suelo.
- ¿Qué escribió? Muchos lo han adivinado, pero nosotros no lo sabemos.
- Posiblemente Jesús estaba escribiendo los diez mandamientos, o los pecados de aquellos que la acusaban, señalando su hipocresía. Revelando su pecado como ellos revelaron el de ella.
- Cuando lo presionaron más, Él respondió: “El que no tenga pecado, que tire la primera piedra”.
- Uno a uno dejaron caer sus piedras y se alejaron. Cuando se enfrentaron a su propio pecado, tuvieron que inclinar la cabeza avergonzados.
- Necesitamos el corazón de Jesús para nosotros mismos
- Cuando todos se fueron, Jesús le dijo: “Mujer, ¿dónde están? ¿Nadie te condenó? Y ella respondió: “Nadie, Señor”.
- La ley requería que hubiera dos testigos para que alguien fuera declarado culpable, y los testigos tenían que participar en el apedreo. Sin embargo, no quedó nadie.
- Luego dijo: “Ni yo te condeno; Vete por tu camino y no peques más”.
- En primer lugar, la llamó “mujer”. Esta es la misma palabra que usó cuando le habló a su madre. Es un término de respeto. Asombroso.
- ¿Con qué otros nombres podría haberla llamado? No voy a repetirlos. ¿Estamos definidos por nuestro pecado? ¿Mentiroso, asesino, adúltero o alcohólico?
- Jesús la vio desde una perspectiva diferente. ¿La miró y la vio cuando era una niña, jugando con sus muñecas, con inocencia mirando al mundo con los ojos muy abiertos? Habría habido algo hermoso en su pureza e inocencia.
- En algún momento, la mujer de nuestra historia creció y comenzó a florecer, tal vez comenzó a encontrar su valor en ser deseable, en entregarse a los hombres, en buscar amor y aceptación, pero sintiéndose cada vez más vacía. Hubo un momento en que su corazón comenzó a endurecerse y, finalmente, se acostumbró a entregarse.
- Pero ahora, delante de ella, estaba el Mesías, y después de intimidar a sus acusadores, le dijo: “Tampoco yo te condeno. Vete por tu camino y no peques más”.
- Creo que lo que cambió la vida de esta mujer fue cuando miró a los ojos de Jesús y vio Su amor, bondad, gracia y compasión. Tal vez ella vio el dolor en sus ojos, la tristeza de lo que el pecado le estaba haciendo a la hermosa persona que Él creó.
- Tal vez ella, en ese momento de convicción, entendió y vio la destrucción y la muerte que el pecado estaba trayendo a su vida. Tal vez ella vio en sus ojos la nueva vida, el amor y la aceptación que realmente la define, no la lujuria vacía de otros a los que se ha entregado.
- Entonces Jesús dice, ve y no peques más. Ahora sabemos que no llegamos a estar totalmente libres de pecado cuando somos salvos. No entender este derecho puede ser un baluarte de condenación que el enemigo utiliza.
- El contexto es el siguiente. Has sido perdonado. Has sido liberado. No sigas entregándote a este pecado que produce la muerte. Escoge permanecer habitualmente en el camino de la rectitud y el honor.
- Hay cosas que tienes que dejar ir. Termina con eso. No te arrepientas porque te atraparon, lamenta porque quieres terminar con esto.
- ¿A qué nivel conecta contigo esta historia? ¿Estás atrapado en este mismo pecado? Arrepiéntete de ello; Ríndete a ella porque destruirá todo lo que aprecias.
- ¿Te lo estás planteando? ¿Sueñas con ello? Y hay muchos otros pecados muy parecidos a este.
- Tenga en cuenta que Dios lo ama y está tratando de salvarlo de dañar su vida.
1 Juan 2:1-2, “Si alguno peca, tenemos abogado para con el Padre…”
- Mucha gente piensa que Dios es como Santa Claus, haciendo una lista, revisándola dos veces. ¿Lo bendeciré o lo condenaré?
- Dios es un Padre, Jesús es nuestro Salvador, y el Espíritu Santo está en nosotros para caminar con nosotros por el camino a la victoria, no a la muerte. Ustedes son aceptados en el Amado, ahora caminen en eso.
Romanos 8:1, “Por tanto, ya no hay condenación para los que están unidos a Cristo Jesús. Porque la ley del Espíritu de vida en Cristo Jesús os ha librado de la ley del pecado y de la muerte.”
