How to Bear Much Fruit
John 12:24-50
February 1, 2026

As a recap we are in the section where Jesus had just raised Lazarus from the grave. Many people spread the news of what happened to Lazarus and because of that a large crowd came to Jesus because of the sign He performed.

After this Jesus had the triumphal entry into Jerusalem where the people rejoiced and sang, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, fulfilling the 600 year old prophecy of Zechariah 9.

That brings us to the verses we’re studying today beginning in verse 20. There were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the Passover feast. They wanted to see Jesus, saying to Philip, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” They were only allowed in the court of the gentiles. They were not allowed into the temple.

Yet, they were sincerely seeking. No doubt, they had heard the great things that Jesus had done because the fame of Him raising Lazarus from the dead was spreading rapidly. They came to Jerusalem to worship and they wanted to see the One whom God has sent.

At this stage Jesus, makes a powerful declaration. The hour has come. Many times before, Jesus said that His time had not yet come. We saw that the Jewish leaders wanted to kill Him many times, but it was not yet God’s time. Jesus knew when the perfect time would be for Him to fulfill the type of being the Passover lamb as well as all the other prophecies.

This declaration He made was in connection with the Greeks seeking Him. Jesus was declaring that he would be lifted up, die, but something incredible would be birthed out of His death. A way to God even for the gentile. The birth of the church.

We also see that the Greeks came to the disciples, and they were the ones that connected them with Jesus.

The disciples is a powerful example; that we need to connect those who are sincerely seeking to Jesus. But how do we show the Lord today? These verses are filled with powerful insights into how people come to know the Lord. It has much to do with how we live.

Jesus’ answer gives us God’s heart for how to live a life that bears fruit to God and makes a difference in the lives of others.

I. Dying Bears Much Fruit

  • At first that sounds counterintuitive, how does dying bear much fruit? It sounds like an oxymoron, such as, awfully good, or pretty ugly, fat-free ice cream.
  • But there are two aspects of this that are important to understand. First, it speaks of His death and resurrection. In 1 Corinthians 15:36, Paul wrote, “That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies;”
  • Jesus was the first seed that had to die to bring forth much fruit. His death and resurrection atoned for the sins of those who put their faith in Him, and they become the fruit. One seed bringing forth much fruit.
  • And it had to be Him. With His sinless nature He was the only one who could take the sins of others upon Himself to die for them. That righteous seed then bears fruit of righteousness, or fruit that are righteous.

Matthew 7:17-18, So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit.

  • But the cycle doesn’t stop there. If you take all the seed and just keep it safely in a barn, you will have some seed, but no further harvest. The seed has to be sown again to exponentially increase the harvest.
  • There needs to be a sowing of the self, a dying to the self, so fruit can come forth, both internally, in your own life, but also externally, impacting people.
  • This speaks about how we should live our lives. This is what Jesus meant in verse 25, “He who loves his life (in this world) loses it; and he who hates his life in this world shall keep it to life eternal.”
  • In other words, the way to find life is by dying, but dying to what?

A. Die to the things which are killing you

  • In verse 25, Jesus said that the one who loves his life in this world shall lose it. In other words, it’s the worldly things that are killing the soul.

1 John 2:15-17, Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not of the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

  • We must read this in the context of John 10:10.

John 10:10, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

  • The things that poison the soul are also things the flesh finds desirable.
  • The problem is that the flesh doesn’t consider the consequences; it wants what it wants and it wants it now. You’re supposed to think about the consequences and say ‘no’ to what the flesh desires because you want something better.

Illus – I have a problem with chocolate…

  • In other words, there’s a part of us that does want the thing we’re tempted by, but we say ‘no,’ we deny ourselves, because spiritual life is more important than momentary pleasure.
  • You can’t have both. If you let the flesh have its way, you’ll find your soul poisoned, depression settles in and your whole life feels yucky.
  • It is sometimes like death by a thousand paper-cuts. At first it feels exhilarating. There is adrenaline in the “danger’. But after a while it bleeds your soul to death.

Illus – There was a technique hunters of olden times used to kill wolves in icy areas…

  • You might say, “Man, God is such a killjoy.” Really? It’s actually quite the opposite…

John 15:11, “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.”

  • Have you ever had a “vacation” from godly things? Soon the soul starts to feel malnourished if it had a continues diet of soul-fast food.

Illus- Recently we went on a trip… All the amazing things of the world do not satisfy the soul. You can stay in a hotel room that costs $10 000 per night, in the end you still spend 8 hours sleeping and you might even still wake up at night stressed, anxious, and tired.

B. Bury yourself in that truth

  • Jesus said this is the key to bearing much fruit. He is the way, the truth, and the life. In his words are life.
  • Jesus said in verse 26, “If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me… If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.”
  • You, the seed, should be buried in the word, the truth of God.
  • In the word, you see the truth and you die to the lie. You surround yourself with the truth.

Illus- Imagine yourself being a seed. Imagine it is lying on top of the ground, seeing the birds that want to snatch it up, or the storms-clouds that are coming to wash it away, or the steamroller that wants to crush it. All a deep planted seed would see is the ground around it.

Psalm 32:7, You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

  • When we look around us and focus on the things of this world, it can become discouraging. That’s why you should bury yourself in the truth. Everything should be filtered through God’s word, His promises, His principles, His truth.
  • The result is that you’ll have real life, God’s life, peace, and joy, and flowing from that great spiritual strength and a life that honors God.
  • Animals are driven by base desires; the more we allow the flesh to be in control, the more base we are.

Illus – However, even animals can demonstrate mastery over these desires. Many times, pain is the wake up call…

  • Sin has its own pain built into it, and the message it should drive us to is that it is not worth it. There is a better way.

1 Corinthians 6:12, All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.

  • However, there is a great difference between self-denial and denial of self by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 5:22-23, The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such things there is no law.

App – What steals your joy? What steals your peace? What steals your patience…?

Illus – Jesus told the well know parable of the Sower. The seeds sown on the rocky places speak of those who receive the message with joy, but persecution and affliction because of the word makes them fall away, because they are not deeply rooted in the word. Those sown between thorns get strangled because of the worries and deceitfulness of wealth.

App – Many times our actions are the result of wrong believing, or cares or wrong focus, and we all have to deal with this to some degree. If we focus on the truth of the word, surrender to it as it is breathed upon by the Holy Spirit, we will find peace and joy and it will change us from the inside out.

Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

  • Be encouraged: This is not a one-time thing. It is a continual walking, surrendering, choosing to walk in the truth.

II. Don’t be a Covert Christian

  • The word ‘covert’ means secret, not openly acknowledged, clandestine or concealed.
  • There are three groups you see in this chapter. There are believers, both Jews and Greeks, seeking to worship and honor Him as the Messiah.
  • There are unbelievers, those who saw so many signs performed by Jesus, yet were not believing in Him.
  • Then there are covert believers. (Verse 42) “Many even of the rulers believed in Him, but they were not confessing Him, for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.” Why? Because they were afraid of being excommunicated.
  • Unfortunately, there are many people like that today, they are afraid of getting excommunicated by their friends; afraid of losing their friends’ approval.
  • They are afraid their friends will look down on them if they become serious about spiritual things. Can I say something about peer pressure? You be the pressure; if one of my friends pressured me to do something worldly, he would get some pressure back.
  • You are the child of the King. That defines you. Don’t be pulled into the muck of this world and be defined by other’s opinions.

A. Walk in the light of the Father

  • Jesus said, “Walk in the light, that darkness may not overtake you; he who walks in the darkest does not know where he goes.”
  • It is scary when the darkness overtakes you, and overwhelms you. The “lights” of this world can lead you to very dark places.
  • But Jesus is the Sun (son) of righteousness. The sun never stops shining. It only gets dark when you don’t follow Him.

Illus – That’s why Jesus said , WALK in the light so the darkness will not overtake you.

  • Keep walking in the light. Don’t sit down. Don’t turn off to go to that dark side street.
  • I have decided to follow Jesus.
  • There is something very beautiful and powerful about that. I know that I know that I know where I’m going. And I know He walks with me to get there.

Psalm 119:105, Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path.

John 8:31-32, “If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

  • Have you ever experienced that? You feel the darkness of uncertainty creep in, and then you get a light of truth in God’s word. You hold on to it for dear life…

B. Come to Jesus

  • Jesus said that He would draw all men to Himself. But many refused to come. Can you imagine? Jesus is right there performing so many signs, yet they would not believe.
  • Jesus draws all men; He knocks on the door of their heart. But for some, it only makes their heart harder. What hardens their heart? His knocking on the door their heart, His word they refused to hear.
  • That’s what is meant in verses 39 – 40. The heart becomes so calloused that it cannot feel anymore. Turn before you have hardened your heart so much that you cannot feel anymore.

Illus – Research shows that most who come to Christ is in their early to later teens. Those who keep rejecting Jesus for years become calloused, clever and set in their ungodly ways. But God is gracious. It is beautiful when you see older people come to the realization that they need God. I have a few times over the last year stood at sickbeds of older people, seeing them turn to Jesus and give their lives to Him.

C. Love the approval of God

  • The problem with those who believed, but were not confessing Him, is that they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.
  • Seeking the approval of men, we understand. What does it mean to seek the approval of God?
  • The very next thing Jesus spoke of was faith; believing in Jesus and trusting in the Father.
  • In fact, in the very next verses, Jesus said that His Word, which God gives to us as life, as a lamp unto our feet, to draw us near to God our Father, is also the word by which God will judge the world.
  • How do you receive the approval of God? Walk in the light and glorify your Father by taking hold of His Word and living by it. In other words, faith.

2 Corinthians 5:9, Therefore, we also have as our ambition to be pleasing to Him.

  • It pleases Him, because it was His original intent, purpose and design for us.

Ilus – It is so beautiful to see two people who are in love. When they get close to one another one of the most natural things is that they start to hold hands, walking together. It is not a forced thing. It is comfortable, it is connection, it is secure, it is personal.

  • In verse 25 – 26, Jesus said that the one who serves The Lord and follows Him, the Father will honor him. That’s what I want and need, the Father to honor my life because it gives Him glory.
  • Can you imagine? God will honor you. Welcome, faithful servant…
  • This is how and why we bear much fruit.

John 12:24-50    NASB

24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.

27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.” 30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. 31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” 33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die. 34 The crowd then answered Him, “We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes. 36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.”

These things Jesus spoke, and He went away and hid Himself from them. 37 But though He had performed so many signs before them, yet they were not believing in Him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our reportAnd to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again, 40 He has blinded their eyes and He hardened their heart, so that they would not see with their eyes and perceive with their heart, and be converted and I heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him. 42 Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.

44 And Jesus cried out and said, “He who believes in Me, does not believe in Me but in Him who sent Me. 45 He who sees Me sees the One who sent Me. 46 I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness. 47 If anyone hears My sayings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 48 He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day. 49 For I did not speak on My own initiative, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak. 50 I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.”

Cómo dar mucho fruto
Juan 12:24-50

Estaban buscando a Jesús …
I. Morir da mucho fruto

⮚ No puedes tener ambas cosas.

No te sientes. No te desvíes para ir a esa calle oscura.
⮚ He decidido seguir a Jesús.
Yo sé a dónde voy.
⮚ ¿Alguna vez has experimentado eso?
B. Ven a Jesús
