Responding to Strife God’s Way
Genesis 13:5-18
July 28, 2024
Introduction
- I’m sure you will not be surprised when I tell you that our world is filled with strife because our world is filled with difficult people.
- In fact, some people are so difficult they can’t even live with themselves.
ILLUS – Three huts
- When strife shows its ugly fangs and it looks like division is inevitable, how does God want us, His people, to respond?
- During our study, we are going to look at the example of Abraham and discover how he handled the strife that threatened to tear his family apart.
- From Abraham’s example, we will learn important principles for how to respond to strife God’s way.
Genesis 13:5-18
Context
- After a short stay in Egypt due to a famine, Abraham returned to the place where he had first pitched his tent and built his second altar, between Bethel (House of God) and Ai (Heap of Ruins).
- Abraham had learned a valuable lesson while in Egypt; that God had called him to walk by faith and not by sight.
- Now, while living in the Promised Land another problem arose.
- According to Genesis 13:5-7, Abraham and Lot, Abraham’s nephew, had become so wealthy that their herdsmen were striving with one another to water and feed their flocks.
- News of the strife made its way back to Abraham and Lot.
- Something needed to be done.
Transition – The first key for resolving strife God’s way is that we must understand that. . .
I. A Godly Response to Strife begins with Faith (8-9)
- Faith in God must be the foundation of our lives if we want to respond to strife God’s way.
- Let me explain what I mean by showing how faith in God can help us respond to strife God’s way.
- If I say, “I trust God,” but. . .
- Sometimes I think God is against me,
- Or I feel like God does not care,
- Or I wonder if God wants to help,
- In what way(s) do you think I might respond to strife?
- Well, it’s possible that I will. . .
- Hit the panic button.
- I get angry, depressed, anxious, or some combination of the three.
- Next, I will either run and hide from the strife and hope it goes away or. . .
- I will do whatever it takes to control the problem because deep down in my heart I’m not sure if God can or will fix things the way I want things to be fixed
APPL – Does that sound familiar?
- If so, based on your experience, how well do you think things will turn out for me?
- Based on my experience, not so well.
- But if I trust God, which means. . .
- I believe that God is for me,
- I trust that God is all knowing, all powerful, loving, and wise. . .
- And I have faith that nothing comes into my life without His knowledge, permission, wisdom, and grace. . .
- Then I will have peace in my heart and clarity of mind to respond to strife in a godly way because I know that God will be there for me, His presence, wisdom, and grace will be my source of comfort and strength.
APPL – I believe faith in God liberates us to rise above the strife because we know God is in control.
Transition – For instance, when faith in God is the foundation of our lives, we can be gracious in the midst of strife. . .
A. Faith leads with grace (8a)
- Abraham had seniority over Lot.
- Plus, God had promised the land of Canaan to Abraham, not Lot.
- Yet, Abraham approached Lot graciously, he said, “please.”
- Faith leads with grace.
APPL – When strife is knocking at the door, what’s the first word that comes to mind or out of your mouth?
- It’s hard to be gracious when we are struggling in our faith.
- But when we are assured of God’s character, His power, and promises, then we will be liberated to lead with grace.
APPL – And, when we are intentional about leading with grace, I believe God helps us know how to respond to strife.
Colossians 4:6, Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned as it were with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to each person.
APPL – And, when we are intentional about leading with grace, we potentially avoid making matters worse by adding the wrong kind of fuel to the fire.
Proverbs 15:1, A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
ILLUS – Abraham Lincoln’s counsel to Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton.
APPL – There is great application for us here.
- Before we confront the wrong way, calm down, think, and pray.
- Before we speak the wrong words, stop talking, listen, and pray.
- Before we post anything online, stop typing, pray, and think.
- Ask these three questions:
- Is this true?
- Is this gracious?
- Is this the right time?
Transition – Next, when faith in God is the foundation of our lives, we will seek unity in the midst of strife. . .
B. Faith seeks to unite (8b)
1. Strife is inevitable in a fallen world, even in families and the church.
1 Corinthians 11:19, No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. (NIV)
2. Abraham’s faith motivated him to take the first step and seek unity.
a. He did not ignore the problem.
b. Nor did Abraham get angry and pick a fight.
James 1:19-20, But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
c. Abraham sought to win over Lot’s heart by appealing to him as a brother.
APPL – When strife starts, are you more concerned about being right or being reconciled?
ILLUS – Mission trip goes south after I offended a brother in Christ.
3. Also note that Abraham’s faith motivated him to maintain a good testimony.
a. Abraham had blown his testimony in Egypt when he lied about his marriage to Sarah.
b. Back in the Promised Land, Abraham sought to maintain his witness before the Canaanites and Perizzites because they were watching.
APPL – Our non-Christian family and friends are watching us as well. May we seek to maintain a good witness.
John 17:20-21, I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that You sent Me.
Transition – And, when faith in God is the foundation of our lives, we will put others first in the midst of strife. . .
C. Faith puts others first (9)
- Abraham could have demanded his right to pick first because God had promised him the land.
- But Abraham had learned his lesson about putting himself first in Egypt.
- By faith, Abraham let Lot pick first because he knew God would keep His promise.
APPL – Here is the takeaway: If God is in it, then we do not have to fret, control, or manipulate.
- We can be gracious.
- We can seek to unite.
- We can put others first, just like Jesus did.
Philippians 2:3-5, Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.
ILLUS – “Over my dead body!”
APPL – But what do you do when someone does not want to reconcile? What next?
Romans 12:17-18, 21, Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Transition – The second key for resolving strife God’s way is that we must be confident that. . .
II. God will Reward a Godly Response to Strife (14-18)
- Why does God reward godly responses to strife?
- Because, as I stated earlier, a godly response to strife is the fruit of faith. And. . .
A. God rewards faith (14-17)
Hebrews 11:6, And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
1. Now that Lot was gone, God spoke to Abraham again.
- God said to Abraham, “Lift up your eyes” to the north, south, east, and west.
- This land will be your descendants’ land forever.
- Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth.
- Later, God promised Abraham that his descendants would be like the stars in the night sky. (Gen. 22:17)
- So, day or night, Abraham was reminded of God’s promise.
2. “Arise and walk” meaning God was giving the land to Abraham.
a. So God wanted Abraham to know the land.
b. And God wanted Abraham to enjoy what He was doing for him.
Transition – And when God rewards faith, there is only one right response. . .
B. Faith responds in worship (18)
- Abraham did as the Lord told him.
- He walked the Promised Land.
- Each day, he looked at the dust under his feet and the stars in the night sky and gave thanks for God’s promises.
- Abraham pitched his tent in Hebron and built an altar.
- To express his gratitude.
- To express his devotion through worship.
Psalm 95:6-7, Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.
Conclusion
APPL – Sometimes, the root cause for our striving with others is that we are really striving with God.
Psalms 46:1-3, 8-11, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.
Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has wrought desolations in the earth. He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire. Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold.
- Is there strife in your life?
- Ask the Lord to be your refuge and strength.
- Ask the Lord to be your very present help in trouble.

Genesis 13:5-18
8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. 9 Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left.” 10 Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere-this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar. 11 So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. 12 Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the Lord.

Introducción
- Estoy seguro de que no se sorprenderán cuando les diga que nuestro mundo está lleno de conflictos porque nuestro mundo está lleno de personas difíciles.

Génesis 13:5-18
Contexto
- Después de una corta estadía en Egipto debido a una hambruna, Abraham regresó al lugar donde primero había plantado su tienda y construyó su segundo altar, entre Betel (Casa de Dios) y Ai (Montón de ruinas).
- Abraham había aprendido una valiosa lección mientras estaba en Egipto; que Dios lo había llamado a andar por fe y no por vista.
- Ahora, mientras vivía en la Tierra prometida, surgió otro problema.
- Según Génesis 13:5-7, Abraham y Lot, el sobrino de Abraham, se habían vuelto tan ricos que sus pastores contendían unos con otros para dar de beber y alimentar a sus rebaños.

I. Una respuesta piadosa a los conflictos comienza con la fe (8-9) |
- La fe en Dios debe ser el fundamento de nuestras vidas si queremos responder a los conflictos a la manera de Dios.
- Permítanme explicar lo que quiero decir al mostrar cómo la fe en Dios puede ayudarnos a responder a los conflictos a la manera de Dios.
- Si yo digo: “Confío en Dios”, pero…
o A veces pienso que Dios está en mi contra, o O siento que a Dios no le importa,
o O me pregunto si Dios quiere ayudar,
o ¿De qué manera(s) crees que podría responder a los conflictos?
- Bueno, es posible que lo haga…
o Presiona el botón de pánico.
o Me enojo, me deprimo, me pongo ansioso o alguna combinación de las tres.
o A continuación, correré y me esconderé de la contienda y esperaré que desaparezca, o…
o Haré lo que sea necesario para controlar el problema porque en el fondo de mi corazón no estoy seguro de si Dios puede o va a arreglar las cosas de la manera en que yo quiero que se
arreglen.
APLICACIÓN (APL) – ¿Te suena familiar?
- Si es así, según su experiencia, ¿qué tan bien cree que le saldrán las cosas?
- Según mi experiencia, no tan bien.
- Pero si confío en Dios, lo que significa…
o P que Dios es para mí,
o Confío en que Dios es omnisciente,
todopoderoso, amoroso y sabio.
o Y tengo fe en que nada entra en mi vida sin Su conocimiento, permiso, sabiduría y gracia.
o Entonces tendré paz en mi corazón y claridad mental para responder a los conflictos de una manera piadosa, porque sé que Dios estará allí para mí, Su presencia, sabiduría y gracia serán mi fuente de consuelo y fortaleza.
APL – Creo que la fe en Dios nos libera para elevarnos por encima de la contienda porque sabemos que Dios tiene el control.
Por ejemplo, cuando la fe en Dios es el fundamento de nuestras vidas, podemos ser misericordiosos en medio de la contienda.
- La fe guía con la gracia (8a)
- Abraham era mayor que Lot.
- Además, Dios le había prometido la tierra de Canaán a Abraham, no a Lot.
- Sin embargo, Abraham se acercó a Lot
amablemente y le dijo: “Por favor”.
- La fe guía con la gracia.
APL – Cuando la lucha llama a la puerta, ¿cuál es la primera palabra que viene a la mente o sale de tu boca? ● Es difícil ser misericordioso cuando estamos luchando en nuestra fe.
- Pero cuando estemos seguros del carácter de Dios, de Su poder y de sus promesas, entonces seremos liberados para dirigirnos con gracia.
APL – Y, cuando tenemos la intención de dirigirnos con gracia, creo que Dios nos ayuda a saber cómo responder a los conflictos.
Colosenses 4:6, “Que vuestra palabra sea siempre con gracia, sazonada como con sal, para que sepáis cómo debéis responder a cada uno”.
APL – Y, cuando tenemos la intención de dirigirnos con gracia, potencialmente evitamos empeorar las cosas al agregar el tipo incorrecto de combustible al fuego.
Proverbios 15:1, “La respuesta amable quita la ira, pero la palabra áspera enciende la ira”.
ILUS- Consejo de Abraham Lincoln al Secretario de Guerra, Edwin Stanton.
APL – Aquí hay una gran aplicación para nosotros. ● Antes de enfrentar el camino equivocado, cálmate, piensa y ora.
- Antes de que pronunciemos las palabras
equivocadas, deje de hablar, escuche y ore.
- Antes de publicar algo en línea, deje de escribir, ore a Dios y piense.
- Hazte estas tres preguntas:

o ¿Es esto amable?

- La fe busca unir (8b)
- La lucha es inevitable en un mundo caído, incluso en las familias y en la iglesia.
1 Corintios 11:19, Sin duda, tiene que haber divisiones entre ustedes, para que se demuestre quiénes cuentan con la aprobación de Dios. (NVI )
- La fe de Abraham lo motivó a dar el primer paso y buscar la unidad.
- No ignoró el problema.
- Tampoco Abraham se enojó y buscó una
pelea.
Santiago 1:19-20, “Mas todos sean prontos para oír, lentos para hablar, y lentos para airarse, porque la ira del hombre no alcanza la justicia de Dios.
- Abraham trató de ganarse el corazón de Lot apelando a él como a un hermano.
APL – Cuando comienzan los conflictos, ¿te preocupa más tener razón o reconciliarte?
ILUS – El viaje misionero va al sur después de que ofendí a un hermano en Cristo.
- Fíjate también en que la fe de Abraham lo motivó a mantener un buen testimonio.
- Abraham había echado a perder su testimonio en Egipto cuando mintió acerca de su
matrimonio con Sara.
- De vuelta en la Tierra prometida, Abraham trató de mantener su testimonio ante los
cananeos y los ferezeos porque ellos estaban observando.
APL – Nuestra familia y amigos no cristianos también nos están observando. Procuremos mantener un buen testimonio.
Juan 17:20-21, “No pido sólo por éstos, sino también por los que creen en mí por su palabra, para que todos sean uno, así como tú, oh Padre, estás en mí, y yo en ti, que ellos también estén en nosotros, para que el mundo crea que tú me enviaste.
Transición – Y, cuando la fe en Dios es el fundamento de nuestras vidas, pondremos a los demás en primer lugar en medio de la lucha.
- La fe pone a los demás en primer lugar (9) 1. Abraham podría haber exigido su derecho a escoger primero porque Dios le había prometido la tierra.
- Pero Abraham había aprendido la lección de ponerse a sí mismo en primer lugar en Egipto. 3. Por fe, Abraham dejó que Lot escogiera primero porque sabía que Dios cumpliría su promesa.
APL – Aquí está la conclusión: si Dios está en ello, entonces no tenemos que preocuparnos, controlar o manipular. ● Podemos ser misericordiosos.
- Podemos tratar de unirnos.
- Podemos poner a los demás en primer lugar, tal como lo hizo Jesús.
Filipenses 2:3-5, “No hagáis nada por egoísmo o vanagloria, sino que con humildad de ánimo, cada uno de nosotros se considere más importante que a sí mismo; no miréis solamente por nuestros intereses, sino también por los de los demás. Tengan en ustedes esta actitud que también hubo en Cristo Jesús”.
ILUS – “¡Sobre mi cadáver!”
APL – ¿Pero qué hacer cuando alguien no quiere reconciliarse? ¿Y ahora qué?
Romanos 12:17-18, 21, “Nunca devuelvas mal por mal a nadie. Respeta lo que es justo a los ojos de todos los hombres. Si es posible, en la medida en que dependa de ti, mantente en paz con todos los hombres. No te dejes vencer por el mal, sino vence el mal con el bien.”
Transición – La segunda clave para resolver los conflictos a la manera de Dios es que debemos estar seguros de que.

II. Dios recompensará una respuesta piadosa a la contienda (14-18) |
- ¿Por qué recompensa Dios las respuestas piadosas a los conflictos?
- Porque, como dije antes, una respuesta piadosa a la contienda es el fruto de la fe.
- Dios recompensa la fe (14-17)
Hebreos 11:6 – La Biblia de las Américas
6 Y sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios; porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que Él existe, y que es remunerador de los que le buscan.
- Ahora que Lot se había ido, Dios le habló a Abraham de nuevo.
- Dios le dijo a Abraham: “Alza tus ojos” al
norte, al sur, al este y al oeste.
- Esta tierra será la tierra de tus descendientes para siempre.
- Tu descendencia será como el polvo de la tierra. ● Más tarde, Dios le prometió a Abraham que sus descendientes serían como las estrellas
en el cielo nocturno. (Génesis 22:17.)
- Así, día o noche, a Abraham se le
recordaba la promesa de Dios.
- “Levántate y anda” significa que Dios le estaba dando la tierra a Abraham.
- Así que Dios quería que Abraham conociera la tierra.
- Y Dios quería que Abraham disfrutara de lo que estaba haciendo por él.
Transición – Y cuando Dios recompensa la fe, solo hay una respuesta correcta.
- La fe responde en la adoración (18)
- Abraham hizo lo que el Señor le dijo.
- Caminó por la Tierra prometida.
- Cada día, miraba el polvo bajo sus pies y las estrellas en el cielo nocturno y daba gracias
por las promesas de Dios.
- Abraham plantó su tienda en Hebrón y construyó un altar.
- Para expresar su gratitud.
- Expresar su devoción a través de la adoración.

Conclusión |
APL – A veces, la causa principal de nuestra contienda con los demás es que realmente estamos luchando con Dios.

- ¿Hay conflictos en tu vida?
- Pídele al Señor que sea tu refugio y tu fortaleza. ● Pídele al Señor que te ayude en los problemas. ● Dejen de luchar con Dios y sepan que Él es Dios.
