The Blessing of Finding Wisdom
Proverbs 3:13-26

Aug 31-Sept 1, 2024

The book of Proverbs is famous as a storehouse of wisdom. It was primarily written by Solomon, who reigned as king of Israel after David. Solomon collected wise sayings as a great treasure. And while he wrote many of the Proverbs, he did not write all of them. There are other writers of proverbs as well. These were all assembled into a book, probably during the time of Hezekiah’s revival, later in the history of Israel.

The book of Proverbs is treasured by many who want more wisdom. If we were to do a show of hands of how many want wisdom, even great wisdom, almost all hands would be raised. Many people read a chapter of the Proverbs every day, corresponding to its chapter. They repeat this every month as part of their daily devotions. Why? To get more wisdom.

This is a book that must be interpreted correctly, however. This book contains many proverbs, but not every verse in this book is a proverb. There are many declarations of God contained in this book also and it’s critical that we understand the difference between a proverb and a declaration of God.

Let’s begin by understanding what a proverb is and what a proverb is not. A proverb is a wise saying, usually given as a short instruction for an effective life. A proverb is not a spiritual promise, or prophecy, or a commandment of law. In other words, proverbs are principles for life, not commandments.

We could use modern examples to illustrate. Here is a modern proverb; many hands make light work. That’s a wise saying and is generally true but must be applied correctly. Many hands do not always make light work. If you’re knitting a sweater, many hands will make a mess out of the thing.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away is a wise saying. It means, of course, that if you eat well, like fresh fruits and vegetables, you will be healthier and likely not need a doctor. However, it’s not a promise. A person can eat an apple a day for years and still need a doctor. It’s a proverb, a wise saying.

Perhaps the most famous example from this book is Proverbs 22:6, “Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” It’s a proverb, a wise saying, not a guarantee. It means that if you raise up a child in the discipline and instruction of the Lord, he will be much more likely to walk the path of the Lord throughout his life. It’s not a guarantee. There have been many who were raised by godly parents in a godly home under godly discipline and instruction, and yet went wayward after they left home.

That being said, while this book contains wise sayings, or proverbs, there are many declarations of God contained in this book that are absolutely true. You can build your life on them. They’re not proverbs, they’re declarations of absolute truth.

1:8, “Hear your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching and they will be a graceful wreath to your head.” That’s not just generally true, it’s always true. It’s not a proverb, it’s a declaration of God.

1:10, 15-16, 18, “My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent… Do not walk in the way with them… Their feet run to evil… And they are ambushing their own lives.” That’s not just sometimes true, that’s always true. It’s not a proverb, it’s a declaration of God.

1:22-23, “Fools hate knowledge. But if you turn to my reproof, I will pour out my spirit upon you; and I will make my words known to you.” That’s not a proverb, that’s a declaration you can build your life on.

2:6-8, “The Lord gives wisdom; and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding… He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, and He preserves the way of his godly ones.” These are not just wise sayings; these are declarations of God.

The first verses of chapter 1 give the purpose and aim for which Solomon wrote his proverbs… to give prudence to the naïve, to give knowledge and discretion to the youth, so that a wise man will increase in learning, that a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, that all readers would be able to understand a proverb and a figure, and to understand the words of the wise and their riddles.

To understand a figure means to understand an enigma, a deep problem. This is certainly one reason people seek wisdom, to be able to understand an enigma, a deep problem that confounds them. You need deep wisdom when you’re facing a great difficulty.

2:6, “The Lord gives wisdom; and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

I. The Beginning of Wisdom: Revere the Lord

  • The foundation of the entire book of Proverbs is found in chapter 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” Later, he says the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; the fear the Lord the fountain of life; and in Isaiah, the fear of the Lord is His treasure.
  • The word ‘fear’ in Hebrew means to revere and honor God, to stand in awe of who He is; this is the foundation and beginning of wisdom.
  • This speaks of a relationship where God delights your soul, and His glory and presence abide beautifully in your soul. This is the foundation.
  • This kind of wisdom is far more than just memorizing wise sayings. When the soul delights in God, it also delights in His wisdom. Those who abide in the wisdom of God honor and revere Him.

A. Let wisdom be the beginning and the end

  • Shortly after Solomon was anointed king of Israel, God appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Ask what you wish me to give you.” Solomon did not ask for a long life, nor for great riches, nor for the life of his enemies. Above all else, he wanted wisdom to be able to judge the people of Israel, to discern between good and evil.
  • God was pleased that Solomon asked for wisdom and discernment to be able to judge the people of Israel. He said, “I have done according to your words, I have given you a wise and discerning heart… And I have also given you what you have not asked, both riches and honor so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days…”
  • God then appeared to Solomon a second time and said, “If you will walk in My ways and keep My words, I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever… But if you or your sons turn away from following Me, I will cut off Israel from the land and this house will become a heap of ruins.”
  • Solomon asked for wisdom; it was the right thing to seek.
  • But he did not finish well. He did not follow his own advice and counsel; he did not follow after godly wisdom and the results were tragic.
  • The tragic results are reflected in another of the books Solomon wrote, Ecclesiastes. Here was a man who had everything and yet had nothing. A man who had everything, yet cried out against the vanity and emptiness of his life because he did not abide in the wisdom God gave him.
  • And that is the greatest truth of all; don’t lose your way; the one who hears the words of Christ and acts on them is the one who is truly wise — Because Jesus is the wisdom of God.

Colossians 2:2-3, Attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

  • When you draw near to Jesus, you will have the wisdom of God and the heart of God as well.

B. Seek the wisdom that comes from God

  • There is what could be called the wisdom of the world and there is a vast difference between the so-called wisdom of the world and the wisdom that comes from God.

1 Corinthians 3:19, For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God.

Proverbs 2:6-10, For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

  • At one point, Solomon formed a marriage alliance with Pharaoh and took Pharaoh’s daughter to become his wife.
  • This was politically savvy. This was commonly done by kings of nations in that day. It was considered wise and prudent. Solomon made an alliance of peace with Egypt by marrying the Pharaoh’s daughter.
  • It may have been politically savvy, but it was spiritually disastrous. By the way, David needed no such alliances. David didn’t care about political expediency, he relied on the help of God.

2 Corinthians 6:14, Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?

1 Kings 11:1-2, King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, “You shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate with you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their gods.” Solomon held fast to these in love.

  • God had warned in His word that this would not end well.
  • This is one of the great insights of wisdom; that it predicts the outcome. God warned Israel not to form alliances with worldly nations because of the outcome it would produce. Godly wisdom predicts the outcome… “They will surely turn your heart away after their gods.”

II. Seek the Reward of Wisdom

  • Verse 3:13 – “How blessed is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding.”
  • The man who finds wisdom is blessed and will be blessed because of the reward of wisdom.
  • The one who is wise in his own eyes and rejects the wisdom of God will find the opposite is true; that that which comes back to him is most unpleasant.

Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 1:29-31, Because they despised knowledge, and did not choose to fear the Lord, because they would not accept my counsel and spurned all my reproof, they shall eat of the fruit of their own way.

  • The question then is this; what do you seek? Desire the reward of wisdom.

A. The profit of wisdom is better than silver

  • Verse 14-15 — “Its profit is better than the profit of silver, and its gain is better than fine gold. She is more precious than jewels; and nothing you desire compares with her.”
  • What is the value of wisdom? Those who are wise know that the value of wisdom is greater than material wealth.

Proverbs 16:16, How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver.

Illus – Imagine a man who had an abundance of both wealthy and wisdom. He has an abundance of both. You then ask him to choose; if he must give up one or the other, which would be choose, his wealth or his wisdom. I can absolutely assure you – without a doubt in my heart – that any man who is wise will answer; “You may take my wealth, but I must have my wisdom.”

Job 28:13-18, “Man does not know the value of wisdom… Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it, nor can silver be weighed as its price… The acquisition of wisdom is far above that of pearls.”

  • The profit, the gain, the reward of wisdom is both present and future.
  • It is of great gain in the present because it changes who you are. Right now. It transforms your soul into that which is beautiful.

Luke 6:45, “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for the mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.

  • The life is lived and the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart. When you treasure God’s word, when you store up God’s word it becomes the treasure from which life is lived and from which the mouth speaks. That which comes out from within you is that which you treasure in your heart.
  • Verse 17-18 – The ways of wisdom are pleasant, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who hold her fast.
  • The gain and reward of wisdom is also in the future. It is the reward of those who treasure wisdom today. It will come back to you.

Galatians 6:8-9, The one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

B. The Lord will be your confidence

  • Verses 23-26 – Then you will walk in your way securely, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden fear, nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes; for the Lord will be your confidence, and he will keep your foot from being caught.
  • This, Solomon would have learned from his father, David who understood the confidence that comes from faith; believing that God will meet you in your insufficiency. That God will be with you through every difficulty.
  • But there is also a confidence that comes from godly wisdom. I emphasize the godly part.
  • Those who are godly are not wise in their own eyes, they do not lean on their own understanding. Their confidence is in God and the wisdom which God writes upon their heart.

Proverbs 3:3-6, Write them on the tablet of your heart and you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.

The Blessing of Finding Wisdom
Proverbs 3:13-26

Aug 31-Sept 1, 2024

Proverbs, of course, is famous for being a storehouse of wisdom. Most people, of course, recognize primarily written by Solomon, who was David's son, the one who reigned in Israel after David, he was not the only one who contributed to the book. There were others, as we will see as we go through this. It was probably assembled, all these collections of Proverbs were assembled, probably later in the history of Israel, very likely during the revival of Hezekiah because it mentions Hezekiah's servants there. Of course, the book of Proverbs is highly treasured by those who want more wisdom.

It's a book of wisdom, and those who want wisdom, they will find treasures of wisdom in this book. Everybody wants wisdom. If we could do a show of hands, how many want, oh, not just wisdom, great wisdom, God's wisdom? Show of hands, everybody would say, "Yes, I want that." That's in this book. Now, many people I mentioned this Wednesday, have this pattern in their daily devotions, where they will read the Psalm or the Proverb of the day. Proverbs 1, first day of the month, Proverbs 5, for the fifth day of the month. They just correspond this way. They do it every month.

There's 31 Proverbs, works out very well. Every single month? Yes, why? Because they want wisdom, and the regular diet of wisdom is why they would do this. Now, this is a book that must be interpreted correctly. It's very important to understand how to interpret the Proverbs. It is called Proverbs because it contains many Proverbs. A proverb is a wise saying, oftentimes very short, pithy, wise saying. Many just stand by their own, many different wise sayings. Solomon collected from many different sources wise sayings. Having said that, while it contains many wise sayings, many Proverbs, not every verse in the book is a proverb.

There are declarations of God woven into the Proverbs. Now, we need to understand when a verse is a proverb and when a verse is a declaration of God. It's critical that we understand the difference between a proverb and a declaration of God in this book. Let's begin by understanding what a proverb is and what a proverb is not. A proverb is a wise saying, short, usually instruction for living. They're focused on living, how you live, wisdom for daily, every day life. The topics they address are every topic that one would encounter in life, relationships, money, laziness, on and on, marriage, business.

Every topic is addressed in the practical aspect of a proverb, a wise saying for effective life. A proverb is not a spiritual promise, it's not a prophecy, it's not a commandment. In other words, Proverbs are principles. Now, we could use modern examples to illustrate what a proverb would be. There are modern Proverbs, modern day. For example, many hands make light work. That's a proverb. Many would say, "Oh yes, there's a truth to that, but it's not an absolute truth." It's generally true. It's a principle, and you would generally apply it as a wise, many hands make light work. That's a general truth, but it's not always true.

Many hands do not always make light work. If you're knitting a sweater, many hands will make a mess of the thing. No, it depends on the application. There's the thing, it depends on the application. A proverb is a principle. It must be rightly applied. Here's another modern day one I mentioned Wednesday, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. That's a proverb. It's a wise saying. Is it always true? It's generally true. What does that mean? Of course, it means, of course, that if you eat well, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables, you'll be healthier and very likely you won't need a doctor. Is it a guarantee?

Is it a spiritual promise, "Hey, if you eat an apple a day, you will never need a doctor"? Then, "Yes, I'm going to claim this promise. I'm going to stand on this promise. I'm going to eat an apple a day and I'm never going to need a doctor." Which I would then say, "Well, what are you going to die from?" No, it's a general principle. What? I've been eating an apple a day for five years and then I got sick. Pastor, you're not telling the truth. No, it's a general principle. I think that one of the most famous examples in the book of Proverbs that must be properly understood is raise up a child.

This is Proverbs 22:6, "Raise up a child in the way he should go, and when he's old, he will not depart from it." It's a proverb. It's a principle of life that it means if you raise up your child in the discipline and the instruction of the Lord, that that child would be much more likely to walk the path of the Lord throughout his or her life, but it's not a guarantee. There have been many who were raised by Godly parents in a Godly home Under godly discipline and instruction, and yet wayward they went after they left home. Now, that being said, while this book contains proverbs, it contains wise saying, as I mentioned, there are many declarations of God in the book.

That declarations of God are true, they're absolutely true. They're not a principle. No, these are truths, strong, absolute truths, declarations. Here's some examples. Proverbs 1:8, "Hear your father's instruction, do not forsake your mother's teaching, and they will be a graceful wreath around your head." In other words, stature will be yours when you abide in the wisdom and the instruction of your Godly mother and father. That's not a sometimes truth, that's a declaration. That's a strong, absolute truth. Proverbs 1:10 and then other verses, "My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. Don't walk in the way with them.

Their feet run to evil, and they are ambushing their own lives. Don't follow them. They're destroying themselves." Is that sometimes true? No, that's always true. Sinners running after evil are, in fact, destroying themselves. That's not sometimes true, that's always true. That's a declaration of God. Proverbs 1:22-23, "Fools hate knowledge." That's a truth. That's a declaration of truth, "If you turn to my reproof, I will pour out my Spirit upon you, I will make my words known to you." That is a declaration of God. You can stand on that. Proverbs 2:6-8, "It's the Lord who gives wisdom, and from God's mouth comes knowledge and understanding."

That's not sometimes true, that's always true. God is a shield to those who walk with integrity in their hearts. That's not sometimes true, that's always true. He preserves the waves, Godly ones. Now, the very first verses of Chapter 1 tell us the purpose of Proverbs. The aim. Why? Why were these given to us? Gives us the reason. Summarizes it in chapter 1.

He says, "To give prudence to the naive." If someone is naive, you know what, sometimes we say, "Oh, you are so naive," to a person who lacks wisdom. "Oh, are you that naive?" We sometimes say to a person who lacks wisdom.

He writes, "I'm going to write a book to give prudence to those who are naive, to give knowledge and discretion to youth." Youth need, they're young, they're inexperienced, they don't know how life works. They need wisdom. They need the principles so God, He gave us this book for youth to have knowledge and discretion. He writes the book so that a person who is wise will be wiser still. There is always deeper places of wisdom to go. "I'm going to give you more wisdom, oh, you who are wise and then that the man of understanding would acquire wise counsel." Then he says, "That all readers would be able to understand a proverb and to understand a figure, to understand the riddles." See, to understand a figure means to understand an enigma, a deep problem. He's writing for this reason to equip you, to give you the transformation that comes from wisdom so that you can understand an enigma, a problem. Many, many people face deep, deep problems, great conundrums of life, and they need wisdom.

New Testament believers, James says, "If any man lacks wisdom, if anyone is in need of wisdom, let them ask of God, who gives generously and will never reprove you for asking for that." We're going to jump into Chapter 3, starting in verse 13. What a great section. Again, if you miss the other verses, that's Wednesday verse by verse chapter by chapter. Chapter 3, beginning verse 13, "How blessed is the man who finds wisdom." That's where the title and the message came from, the blessings of finding wisdom. How blessed, oh, it's blessing to you. You find wisdom, you'll be blessed.

"How blessed is the man who gains understanding for his profit, the profit of wisdom is better than the profit of silver. The gain of wisdom is greater than the gain of fine gold. She, wisdom, is more precious than jewels, and nothing that you desire compares with her, with wisdom." No matter what it is that you desire, I don't care what it is you says, there is nothing that you desire that compares with wisdom. Needs to be the highest, the very highest desire. 4:16, "For long life is in her hand, and in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways, the ways of wisdom are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.

She, wisdom, is a tree of life to those who take hold." See wisdom, you must take hold of it. When you take hold of the wisdom, that wisdom will become to you a tree of life, "And happy," the word there is blessed in Hebrew, "And happy are all who hold onto her fastly." When you hold onto wisdom, you hold onto her, you hold on. "For the Lord by wisdom founded the earth and by understanding he established the heavens. By His knowledge, the deeps were broken up and the skies drip with dew. My son, do not let them depart from your sight, wisdom of God, don't let them depart from you. Keep, that means guard, sound wisdom and discretion."

Collect them, let them be treasures that you collect, "So that they will be life to your soul, and they will become an adornment to your neck. Then you will walk in your way securely and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you'll not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden fear, nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes. For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught in the traps, and devices, and schemes of the evil world." Oh, this is a great way to begin the Proverbs. It's amazing. Let's give it all our praise. Exactly right, it's amazing.

I. The Beginning of Wisdom: Revere the Lord

Now, I'd like us to see how these verses would apply. I want to begin with perhaps in Chapter 1, the verse that in so many ways is the foundation to the entire book. That is 1:7, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, the beginning of wisdom." He says later, "The beginning of wisdom." The fear of the Lord is the beginning, the foundation. Later in another place, he says, "The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life." Then in Isaiah, "The fear of the Lord is His great treasure." In other words, the beginning of wisdom is when we fear the Lord. That's what fear the Lord means in Hebrew.

You see, it's not an intimidation fear, it's an awe. It's a revering, it is a place of honor. Now, this is important. It's the beginning. It's the condition of your soul is the beginning of wisdom. You can collect wisdom sayings, you can memorize wisdom sayings, but he says, "This kind of wisdom is founded upon your soul. Let your soul be in a place where you honor God and you revere God." Start there and then you add wisdom, that's the beginning. See, this kind of wisdom is far more than memorizing a few pithy sayings. See, when the soul delights in God, it delights in God's wisdom.

A. Let wisdom be the beginning and the end

See, you want, when the soul delights in God then the soul delights in God's wisdom. I want that. I receive that. It's good. Yes, the fear of the Lord is the beginning wisdom. Let wisdom, therefore, be the beginning and the end. See, now, when we think of Solomon, we remember that shortly after Solomon was anointed king, this is a very famous story, that he went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices and whatnot. That night God appeared to him in a dream. God said to Solomon, "Ask whatever you wish for me to give to you." What is it you wish? What would you answer if God said to you, "What is it you wish for me to do for you?

What would you wish for me to do? I would do what you wish. Tell me what you wish." What would you ask for? I think a lot of people would ask for things that are way too small. He says, "I do not know how to lead these people, this great initiative of yours. Give a wise and discerning heart that I might lead these great people of yours." God was so pleased with Solomon that he asked for the wisdom and discernment to be able to lead these great people. He says, "I have done according to what you have asked. I have given you a wise and discerning heart, and I have given you what you did not ask for.

You did not ask for wealth of the enemy, life and again, I give you wealth and honor that which you did not ask for, so that you will be greater than any kings that have come before you or after." Now, what we need to see is that God appeared to Solomon a second time after he had lived a number of years and now was dedicating the temple. He had another dream. In the second dream, He said, "If you would walk in my ways, if you'll keep my words, I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, but if you turn away from my words, if you and your sons turn away, I will cut off Israel from the land and this house will become a heap of ruins."

Solomon asked for wisdom. He started out so well. It was a right thing to ask for, but he did not finish well. We know Solomon did not follow his own counsel and advice. He did not follow the Godly wisdom that God had given him, and the results were tragic. The tragic results were reflected in another book that Solomon wrote, Ecclesiastes, which we will study soon. Here was a man who had everything and yet had nothing. A man who had everything, yet cried out in the vanity of emptiness because he did not abide in the wisdom that God had given to him. See, this is perhaps the greatest truth of all. The foundation of wisdom is your relationship to the Lord, but don't lose your way. Never lose your way. Stay on the path of life and never lose your way. I tell you what, if you begin on the path of life and build on that foundation and then you wander into the wilderness and you wander into the world, you will feel so lost. You will feel so wayward and you'll so regret the day that you wandered away from the presence of the Almighty Glory God. Amen.

Don't lose your way. In the New Testament, when you say, "The one who hears the words of Christ and then lives by them is the one who is wise," because it says in Colossians 2, "Jesus is the very wisdom of God." When you have a relationship to God through Jesus Christ, you have a relationship to the one who is wise. Colossians 2, "Attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God's mystery that is Christ himself in whom are hidden, all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." See, when you draw near to Jesus, you have the wisdom of God and the heart of God.

B. Seek the wisdom that comes from God

Then we see this in the Proverbs, "So, therefore, seek the wisdom that comes from God. I give you this wisdom, so seek after that wisdom, which comes from God." Now, we see that because there is a wisdom from the world, you could say, and there's a vast difference between the so-called wisdom of the world and the wisdom that comes from God. 1st Corinthians 3:19, where Paul wrote, "The wisdom of this world is foolishness before God." Proverbs 2:6-10, "It's the Lord who gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding for he's a shield to those who walk in integrity."

Notice, "For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul." That's the wisdom that comes from God. It abides in the soul. Now, we know at one point, Solomon formed a marriage alliance with the Pharaoh of Egypt and took Pharaoh's daughter to be his wife. Now, this was politically savvy. This was very wise to do politically. This was a common thing done by kings of nations in that day. It was considered worldly wise and prudent. Solomon formed an alliance with another nation by marrying the king's daughter. Oh, how politically savvy. All his counselors, oh, how savvy.

It may have been politically savvy, but it was spiritually disaster. You see, there's a difference between worldly wisdom and Godly wisdom. By the way, side note, David needed no such alliances. David didn't care about political correctness. David didn't care about political expediency. He relied on the help of God, and it's a New Testament principle for us. 2nd Corinthians 6:14, "Do not be bound together with unbelievers for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, and what fellowship has light with darkness." It's a New Testament principle, but it tells us in 1st Kings 11 that King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh.

As I mentioned before, he had a thing for foreign women. He collected foreign women like people collect foreign cars. He had a thing, it was just a thing. Well, not just a thing, it was a terrible thing. He had a thing for foreign women, Moabite women, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, Hittite, notice, from those nations concerning which the Lord has said to the sons of Israel, "You shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate for with you, for they will surely," I want you to see this here, "For they will surely turn your heart away after their gods." It says, "Solomon held fast to these in love."

See, notice God warned Israel in His word that they ought not to associate with foreign women because it will not end well. See, "They will surely turn your hearts away after their gods," that it will not end well. Now, here is one of the greatest insights of wisdom. This is important. Please hear this. One of the greatest insights of wisdom, one of the great reasons why you must store up wisdom in your soul is because wisdom predicts the outcome. Think with me, wisdom predicts the outcome. God warned Israel not to form alliances with worldly nations because of the outcome. It will produce this, they will surely turn your heart away.

II. Seek the Reward of Wisdom

I can tell you the outcome. I can predict the outcome. Wisdom allows you to predict the outcome. This is very important. Why do you want wisdom? To be able to predict the outcome. That's what he says in these verses, that there is a reward. Wisdom has a great reward. Seek the wisdom, seek the reward of wisdom. There is an outcome. There is a reward. See, notice Chapter 3:13, "How blessed is the man who finds wisdom and the man who gains understanding." The man who finds wisdom is blessed and will be blessed because there is a reward. Wisdom brings forth a reward. It produces a great gain.

See, in contrast, the one who is wise in his own eyes, the one who rejects the wisdom of God will find the opposite is true, that that which comes back to him is most unpleasant, the outcome of the one who rejects God. He said," I will predict the outcome." He said, "I'll tell you what the outcome is." The outcome is most unpleasant. You will not like the outcome. There are many people, see, who need to recognize there is a reward for wisdom and there's a price for rejecting Godly wisdom. In fact, I can even do this in a show of hands to prove it to you. How many people would say, "Yes, if I had known what that bad decision was going to cost me, I would never have done it?

Had I known what that bad decision was going to cost me, I would never have done it." Anybody want to raise their hand? Wisdom says, "I can help you predict the outcome." I can show you, I can predict the outcome so that you can see it in advance. You can see it in advance, I will show you the outcome. Proverbs 14:12, "There is a way which seems right to a man because his own wisdom." It's people trying to figure things out for themselves that makes such a mess of their lives. It's people trying to figure stuff out on their own. See, there is a way which seems right to a man. Yes, because he's trying to figure stuff out on his own.

There is a way which seems right to a man, but it's end it's the way of death. I will predict, I'll show you. I can predict the outcome, it's a way of death. This thing, it's not going to end well for you. Proverbs 1:29-31, "Because they despise knowledge, they did not choose the fear of the Lord, they didn't want to revere and honor God, they didn't choose to honor God. Because they did not choose to revere and honor God, because they would not accept my counsel and spurned all my refutes, all my corrective words, they spurned it all."

A. The profit of wisdom is better than silver

He says, "I will tell you the outcome. I'll predict it for you, they're going to eat the fruit of their own way." I'll tell you, it will not end well. See, the question then is this, what is the outcome you want? Wisdom gives you the ability to predict the outcome. What outcome do you want in your life? What results do you want in your life? He says, "Here, desire the reward of wisdom." See, notice what he says next, that the prophet of wisdom is better than silver. That's what he says. Wisdom brings profit to you. Better profit than silver, better gain than gold. See, notice verses 14 and 15, "She, wisdom is more precious than jewels, nothing that you desire." What is it you desire most? It doesn't compare to wisdom. What is the value of wisdom? You have to have a certain degree of wisdom to know the value of wisdom. The beginning of wisdom start with this, understanding the respect and the honor of God. Then you have a measure of wisdom. When you have that beginning measure of wisdom, it will instruct you to value wisdom.

Now, you'll see what wisdom is worth. People who are naive do not know the value of wisdom. You can say that do you not know? Do you not see? Can you not see the value? You want them to see it so badly. Can you not see? Please I want you to see, you got to see the value of wisdom of God, the wisdom that comes from God. Can you not see it? They reject. Look, I got to just figure this out on my own. Oh, please don't say that because it's you figuring things out on your own, that means such a mess. Proverbs 16:16, "How much better it is to get wisdom than gold."

If someone said to you, "Okay I'm going to give you a choice. I'm going to give you a lot of money, I mean a lot of money. I'm going to give you a lot of money or I'm going to give you a lot of wisdom, I mean you are going to rise above your peers. I'm going to give you a great treasure, wisdom. Now, you can have great wisdom or you can have great wealth. Which one do you want?" There are a lot of people right now I'll tell you, who'll say, "Oh, give me the money. I'll take the money. How much money are we talking about here?" Oh, I can tell you many, many stories of people who came into a lot of money and ruined their lives.

Maybe you've read these stories about people who come into a lot of money, I don't know how, maybe inherited a lot of money or whatever, they came into a lot of money and then they ruined their lives. If they would've had wisdom and then they came into a lot of money, they would've known not what to do with it, been wise but wise with it. Which would you choose? God says in His word, "You who have no money come, I'll gift you freely. I will abound in your soul freely, it will cost you nothing." "Oh, well if it doesn't cost me anything and it's not worth anything," says the fool.

Job 28:13-18, "Man does not know the value of wisdom." "I give you great money or I give you great wisdom, which one do you want?" I'll tell you, vast vast vast majority would say, "Give me the money." Job says, "Man does not know, really?" Then you're naive. He said, "Man does not know the value. Pure gold cannot not be given for it, nor silver cannot be weighed for its price. The acquisition of wisdom is far above that of pearls," said a man of great wealth. Now, see the prophet, the gain, the reward of wisdom is both present and future. The great gain of wisdom is present because it will change who you are now, right now in the present.

It will transform your soul into that which is beautiful right now. The reward of wisdom is present and future. The present, it will change who you are. It will transform your soul right now. You don't have to wait for it. It will change, it will transform you right now so that the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, write them on your heart, let them be a storehouse within your soul. Psalm 119, "Your word I have treasured in my heart." Then it become that what you treasure the storehouse of wisdom that you'll become then. It says, "Those who store up wisdom will become a good man or a good woman."

He will transform you right now. Kindness and truth will abide in your soul. Right now you have the way for it. Right now you can have this kindness and truth. You can have right now to be a good man. Jesus said this, Luke 6:45, one of my favorites, "The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what's good." What will come out of you when you have a storehouse within your soul? What will come out of you? Is it the good man out of that great treasure will bring forth what's good? "The evil man out of evil treasure because he is been treasuring evil stuff, is going to bring forth that which is evil for the mouth speaks to the life of that from that which fills the heart."

Great truth. When you treasure, when you store up, you live from it. Notice in verses 17-18, "The ways of wisdom are pleasant." Right now you live by the ways of wisdom, they're pleasantnesses, they're pleasant things. Good reward comes to you right now. The ways of wisdom are pleasantnesses. All the paths of wisdom are peace. "She, wisdom is a tree of life, right now a tree of life to those who take hold of her and happy," the word happy there in Hebrew is Asher. One of the tribes of Israel is called Asher. The word blessed, "Happy, are those who hold her fast". See, the gain and reward of wisdom is present, but it's also future.

It's a reward that will bring to you in the future great gain. Why? Because when your soul is blessed, "Happy are those who hold her fast, and they have pleasantnesses in their soul." You take that soul with you wherever you go, you take that soul with you on the journey in life, and I'll tell you what, blessings are going to flow. You're going to bring that blessed soul with you. One of the greatest blessings you're going to have is that you get a blessed soul wherever you go. I'll give you an illustration of the opposite. Many years ago when we were in Bible college, we had opportunity to manage an apartment building.

There were 40 apartments in it, and it was a great way to get through Bible college, we have free rent. One of the tenants was just a difficult person, just a contentious, he was not a good neighbor. He lived upstairs and his name was Dawn, sorry Dawn. I'm sure he is watching right now. Yes, I'm sure he is. No, I'm sure he is not. If the neighbor downstairs was a little too noisy, he put his cowboy boots on and started stomping on the floor. If he didn't like the food the neighbor's cooking, he'd pound on the wall. Just a difficult neighbor.

This was just going on and on and on. I tried to talk to him and said, "Look man, you live in an apartment complex, you got to be a good neighbor." I don't care what I say to him. He was just like, just that difficult cantankerous person. Finally, I said, "Enough is enough." I posted a 30-day eviction notice on his door. See, he came home from work and called me on the phone, what's this?" I said, "Well, if you look at it, I think it's a 30-day eviction notice." He said, "Why?" I said, "I think if you read it, it says no cause. I don't want to have a dispute about the reason. No reason, I just don't want you here anymore." "Oh, yes, meet me in the parking lot right now." Now, I have to admit, I was caught off guard a little bit and it made me laugh. "I haven't had anybody say that to me." I laughed. I said, "Look, I got over that in junior high. I'm not going to meet you in the parking lot." He said, "Oh, you want our lawyers to take care of this?" I go, "Yes, have your lawyer take care of it. Meanwhile, you got thirty days."

When, of course, he moves on the 30th day, and despite, he put a bunch of stuff in the toilet and he took all of it, every single light bulb he could take just to have the last word. To which I thought, "You know what the greatest punishment that this guy has, he's going to take him with him wherever he goes." Can you imagine living life like this? Wherever you go, that everything is a contention, everything is a battle and an argument. This is no way to live. It will come back to him. It will always come back to him. Who wants a relationship with that? He is going to be lonely and lost, unless he finds hope.

B. The Lord will be your confidence

Those who hold fast wisdom will find pleasantnesses, happy, blessed, and you take that soul with you wherever you go. Galatians 6:8-9, "The one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap life." It will come back to you. "Let's not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap." Good will come to you. There is a reward of wisdom. Then he says this, and we'll close with this, "And that the Lord will be your confidence." It will change the way you live, the way you walk. Notice verses 23-26, "Then you will walk in your way, securely. Your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid."

Because it's founded upon your soul, your soul that's right with God, and you're adding wisdom upon wisdom, upon wisdom, upon wisdom. "You will not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden fear, or the onslaught of the wicked when it comes. For the Lord will be your confidence, and he will keep your foot from being caught." Solomon would have learned this from David. David understood confidence that comes from faith to believe that God will be with you, that God will meet you in your insufficiency, that God will be your great provision, that God will be that which delights your soul, that God is the one who will fill and overflow.

"My cup runneth over," David says. Oh, I know this about my God. Those who are Godly are not wise in their own eyes, they do not lean on their own understanding. In all their ways they acknowledge Him, and He will make their path straight. Their confidence is in God, their wisdom is from God because God has written it upon their soul. Proverbs 3:3-6 just a few verses before, "Write them on the tablet of your heart, write them down on the tablet of your heart, and then you will find favor with God and good repute in the sight of men. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your path straight."

Wisdom is a great treasure, but it's God's wisdom and it's founded upon the soul that's right with God. Let's pray. Lord, we delight in you. Thank you for showing us the light of truth, that the foundation of wisdom is when your soul is right with God. Then you add the treasures of the storehouse of God, line by line, precept by precept, truth by truth, let it be written on your heart. Church, how many would say to the Lord today, let my soul be right with God. Let it begin here with me. Let my soul be right with God. Then add to me the storehouse of treasure, of wisdom.

Add to my soul, write it on the tablet of my heart. I seek for it, I long for it, I value it, I hold it fast. Write it on the tablet of my heart. Let my soul be a storehouse of your treasures of wisdom. How many would say that to the Lord? Would you just raise your hand as you make that declaration, let my soul be the storehouse of wisdom. Oh God, thank you for everyone who delights in you, who honors you, and who seeks the storehouse of wisdom. God, we honor you for it now, in Jesus' name, and everyone said-- Can we give the Lord praise, and glory, and honor, amen? Amen.

Proverbs 3:13-26    NASB

13 How blessed is the man who finds wisdom
And the man who gains understanding.
14 For her profit is better than the profit of silver
And her gain better than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than jewels;
And nothing you desire compares with her.
16 Long life is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are pleasant ways
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who hold her fast.
19 The Lord by wisdom founded the earth,
By understanding He established the heavens.
20 By His knowledge the deeps were broken up
And the skies drip with dew.
21 My son, let them not vanish from your sight;
Keep sound wisdom and discretion,
22 So they will be life to your soul
And adornment to your neck.
23 Then you will walk in your way securely
And your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden fear
Nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes;
26 For the Lord will be your confidence
And will keep your foot from being caught.
