In some ways, life can feel like buying a “must-have” product from an infomercial. You take the plunge thinking it will be different this time. But then reality slaps you in the face and you vow to never fall for that again, until you see the next infomercial.

The truth is it’s easy to feel jaded by life. Who can you trust? And what does real trust look like in an untrustworthy world? Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us all the answers.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Introduction

ILLUS – Infomercials.

  1. In some ways, life can feel like buying a “must-have” product from an infomercial.
  2. You take the plunge thinking it will be different this time because this time it’s going to work.
  3. You’re convinced it’s worth the money because this is exactly what you have been looking for, waiting for. . . it’s what you need.
  4. But then reality slaps you in the face and you realize you been played; you feel like a fool.
  5. So, you vow to never fall for that again, until you see the next infomercial.
  6. The truth is it’s easy to feel jaded by life.
  7. Who can you trust? And what does real trust look like in an untrustworthy world?
  8. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us all the answers.

 Proverbs 3:5-6 

Context

  1. Proverbs 3:1-12 is a wonderful passage filled with wise principles, and divine promises for living a godly life.
  2. In fact, Proverbs 3:5-6 is the foundation for the entire chapter, everything hinges upon the nuggets of wisdom found in these two verses.

Transition – In these two verses we discover “Who” to trust, “How” to trust, and the “Promise” given to those who faithfully apply these words of wisdom to their lives. First question, “Who to trust?”

I. Trust in the Lord (5) YHWH

A. With all of your heart

  1. The word for trust means “to lay helpless, facedown, at the mercy of another.”
    1. It is like a soldier before a victorious general.
    2. Or a servant waiting for a master’s command.

 

  1. So, trust in Proverbs 3:5 is a picture of:
    1. Allegiance and Submission
    2. Confidence and Conviction
    3. Expectation and Hope
    4. Faith and Reliance
  2. In verse 5, trust is a wholehearted commitment.
    1. Because trust is a choice.
    2. With “all your heart” means with all of “one’s mind, emotions, and will.”

APPL – This kind of trust stands firm and declares with a resolute heart, “I will trust the Lord. . .”

  • When there is more month than money in your bank account.

Philippians 4:19, And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

  • When you’re gripped by fear and don’t know what to do. 

Psalm 56:3-4, When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me? 

  • When you’re afflicted, feel abandoned, or persecuted for your faith in Jesus Christ. 

2 Corinthians 4:7-9, But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be of God and not from ourselves; we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. 

  • Even when your health is failing. 

Psalms 73:25-26, Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. 

ILLUS – My grandma’s example before she died of pancreatic cancer 

  1. God wants, and frankly deserves, our whole heart because anything less is half-hearted.
  2. And half-hearted devotion leaves the door open for folly, because when we’re half-hearted, then we will start looking for someone to replace God.

Transition – Here is a word of caution: You will never find a substitute that is more reliable than God. So. . .

 

B. Don’t rely on unreliable substitutes

 ILLUS – Texting my wife, Heidi, “I love you!”

  1. I submit that when we rely or “lean” on our own “understanding” it is highly likely that we are relying on or leaning on an unreliable substitute.
    1. The word for lean is like the word trust.
    2. To lean means to “rely on someone or something for help or protection.”
    3. Understanding refers to our human understanding, which operates in ignorance, because it lacks God’s counsel.
    4. Therefore, “to lean on your own understanding” is, in many ways, to be “wise in your own eyes.”
    5. The Bible warns us about being “wise in your own eyes.”

Proverbs 3:7, Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

 APPL – Why does the Bible warn us about being wise in our own eyes? Because bad things happen when you are wise in your own eyes.

Proverbs 14:12, There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. 

  1. What are the warning signs of being “wise in your own eyes?”
    1. Pride and haughtiness
  • “I knew I could do it”
  • “I just believed in myself”
    1. An unteachable heart and “know-it-all” spirit.
  • “I know, I know.”
  • “I’ve got this!”

Proverbs 16:18, Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling. 

  1. Why is humility so important?
    1. Because we have no reason to boast.

 1 Corinthians 4:7, For who regards you as superior? And what do you have that you did not receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

 ILLUS – The late Alex Haley, author of Roots, had a picture in his office, showing a turtle sitting atop a fence. The picture was there to remind him of a lesson he learned early in life: “If you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he had some help.”

  1. Because God resists the proud but is gracious towards the humble.

James 4:6, 10, God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

  1. Please note that the trust which pleases the Lord is not a blind faith.
    1. It is a trust that looks at the facts and says, “God exists, and I am not God.”

Hebrews 11:6, And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

    1. It is a trust that looks at God’s character and confidently declares, “God is reliable and worthy of my trust.”

Numbers 23:19, God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

APPL – If God said it, He will do it. If God has promised, He will make it good, guaranteed. 

  1. It is a trust that proclaims, “Where God is, that’s where I will call home. The search is over because I have found my forever home!”

Psalm 84:1-4, How lovely are Your dwelling places, O Lord of hosts! My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. The bird also has found a house, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, even Your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. How blessed are those who dwell in Your house! They are ever praising You.

Transition – Now that we know “Who” to trust, next, we will look at “How” to trust in verse 6. 

II. Trust in the Lord in All Your Ways (6)

A. In all your ways acknowledge Him

  1. This is not a mere nodding of the head.
  2. We must see God in life’s events. David said, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)
  3. This means we must seek God daily in prayer.
    1. Surrender your will daily.

Luke 9:23, If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. 

    1. Seek God’s will daily.

Matthew 6:9-10, Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

APPL – Why is Trust/Faith so important to God?

  • Because relationships are built on trust. Do you know of any healthy relationship that was built on doubt or suspicion?

  • Without trust relationships fall apart. 

ILLUS – Satan’s deception/temptation of Eve and Adam

Genesis 3:4-5, And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely shall not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 

APPL – Satan has been accusing God and calling into question His character ever since the Fall.

  • Satan knew if he could get the lie about God’s character to stick, mankind’s relationship with God would be fractured.
  • It worked. Mankind has been looking for someone or something other than God to trust ever since.
  • But we must remember “Who” we are talking about.
  • The LORD, Yahweh, is holy, righteous, just, loving, gracious, faithful, and true.
  • Yahweh, the One who is committed to your welfare. 

Jeremiah 29:11-14, “For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord 

Transition – Now that we know “Who” to trust and “How” to trust, what is the promise for those who trust the Lord like this?

 

A. The Lord will make your path straight                    

  1. “He will make your paths straight.”
    1. This is a wonderful promise.
    2. But it’s also a conditional promise based on trust.
  2. What does this promise mean?
    1. It means that God has our best interests at the center of His heart; He wants to bless our lives.
    2. God knows the best way to accomplish His purpose for our lives.
    3. All His power is available to accomplish the plan He has for us.
    4. It may not be easy street, but it is the best way to achieve the best goal.
    5. And the Lord will get us to the finish line.
    6. Our lives will be successful as God defines success. 

APPL – God is committed to finish what He started in us, to transform us so that we look more like Christ.

Philippians 1:6, For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

Conclusion

APPL – When it comes to trusting God, where do you stand?

  • The choice is yours.
  • You can be as close to God as you want to be.

Joshua 24:15, But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Introducción

ILLUS – Anuncios publicitarios.

  1. En cierto modo, la vida puede parecer como comprar un producto “imprescindible” de un anuncio televisivo.
  2. Te lanzas a la aventura pensando que esta vez será diferente porque esta vez va a funcionar.
  3. Estás convencido de que vale la pena el dinero porque esto es exactamente lo que has estado buscando, esperando… es lo que necesitas.
  4. Pero entonces la realidad te golpea en la cara y te das cuenta de que te han engañado; te sientes como un tonto.
  5. Entonces, juras no volver a caer en eso, hasta que veas el siguiente anuncio publicitario.
  6. La verdad es que es fácil sentirse hastiado de la vida.
  7. ¿En quién puedes confiar? ¿Y cómo se manifiesta la verdadera confianza en un mundo donde no se puede confiar en nadie?
  8. Proverbios 3 :5-6 nos da todas las respuestas.

 

Proverbios 3:5-6

Contexto 

  1. Proverbios 3:1-12 es un pasaje maravilloso lleno de principios sabios y promesas divinas para vivir una vida piadosa.

 

  1. De hecho, Proverbios 3:5-6 es el fundamento de todo el capítulo; todo se basa en las perlas de sabiduría que se encuentran en estos dos versículos.

 

Transición – En estos dos versos descubrimos en quién confiar, cómo confiar y la promesa que se les da a quienes aplican fielmente estas palabras de sabiduría a sus vidas. Primera pregunta: ¿En quién confiar?

 

  1. Confía en el Señor (5) YHWH 
  1. Con todo tu corazón 
  1. La palabra para confianza significa “permanecer como quien no puede ayudarse a sí mismo, como rendido boca abajo, a la merced de otro”.

 

  1. Es como un soldado ante un general victorioso.
  2. O un sirviente que espera la orden de su amo.

 

  1. Por lo tanto, la confianza en Proverbios 3:5 es una imagen de:

 

  1. Lealtad y sumisión
  2. Confianza y convicción
  3. Expectativa y esperanza
  4. Fe y confianza

 

  1. En el versículo 5, la confianza es un compromiso de todo corazón.

 

  1. Porque la confianza es una elección.
  2. Con “todo tu corazón” significa con toda “la mente, las emociones y la voluntad”.

 

APPL – Este tipo de confianza se mantiene firme y declara con un corazón resuelto: “Confiaré en el Señor…”.

 

  • Esta confianza aplica a cuando hay más deudas que dinero en tu cuenta bancaria [y en todos los retos de la vida].

 

Filipenses 4:19, Y mi Dios suplirá todas vuestras necesidades conforme a sus riquezas en gloria en Cristo Jesús.

 

  • Cuando te invade el miedo y no sabes qué hacer.

 

Salmo 56:3-4, Cuando tengo miedo, Pondré mi confianza en ti. En Dios, cuya palabra alabo, en Dios he puesto mi confianza; No tendré miedo. ¿Qué puede hacerme un simple mortal?

 

  • Cuando te sientes afligido, abandonado o perseguido por tu fe en Jesucristo.

 

2 Corintios 4:7-9 – Nueva Biblia de las Américas

 

7 Pero tenemos este tesoro en vasos de barro, para que la extraordinaria grandeza del poder sea de Dios y no de nosotros.

8 Afligidos en todo, pero no agobiados; perplejos, pero no desesperados; 9 perseguidos, pero no abandonados; derribados, pero no destruidos.

 

  • Incluso cuando tu salud está fallando.

 

Salmos 73:25-26, ¿A quién tengo en los cielos sino a ti ? Y fuera de ti, nada deseo en la tierra. Mi carne y mi corazón pueden desfallecer, pero Dios es la fortaleza de mi corazón y mi herencia para siempre.

 

ILUSTRACIÓN – El ejemplo de mi abuela antes de morir de cáncer de páncreas.

 

  • Dios quiere, y francamente merece, todo nuestro corazón porque cualquier cosa menos es una entrega a medias.
  • Y la devoción a medias deja la puerta abierta a la insensatez, porque cuando somos a medias, entonces comenzaremos a buscar a alguien que reemplace a Dios.

 

Transición – He aquí una advertencia: Nunca encontrarás un sustituto más confiable que Dios. Así que…

  1. No confíes en sustitutos poco confiables.

 

ILUSTRACIÓN: Enviándole un mensaje de texto a mi esposa, Heidi, diciéndole: “¡Te amo!”.

 

  1. Sostengo que cuando confiamos o nos apoyamos en nuestro propio “entendimiento”, es muy probable que estemos confiando o apoyándonos en un sustituto confiable.

 

  1. La palabra para apoyarse es como la palabra confianza.
  2. Apoyarse significa “depender de alguien o algo para obtener ayuda o protección” .
  3. El entendimiento se refiere a nuestro entendimiento humano, que opera en la ignorancia, porque carece del consejo de Dios.
  4. Por lo tanto, “apoyarse en su propio entendimiento” es, en muchos sentidos, “ser sabio a sus propios ojos”.
  5. La Biblia nos advierte sobre ser “sabios a nuestros propios ojos”.

 

Proverbios 3:7, No seas sabio en tu propia opinión; Temed al Señor y apartaos del mal.

 

APLICACIÓN – ¿ Por qué la Biblia nos advierte sobre creernos sabios? Porque suceden cosas malas cuando uno se cree sabio.

 

Proverbios 14:12, Hay camino que al hombre le parece derecho, pero su fin es camino de muerte.

 

  1. ¿Cuáles son las señales de alerta de ser “sabio a tus propios ojos”?

 

  1. Orgullo y altivez
    • “Sabía que podía hacerlo”
    • “Simplemente creí en mí mismo”.

 

  1. Un corazón indomable y un espíritu de sabelotodo.
  • “Lo sé, lo sé.”
  • “¡Lo tengo controlado!”

 

ILLUS – Sarpullido por patinaje en pista

 

Proverbios 16:18, El orgullo precede a la destrucción, y la altivez de espíritu a la caída.

 

  1. ¿Por qué es tan importante la humildad?
  2. Porque no tenemos motivos para presumir.

 

1 Corintios 4:7 Nueva Biblia de las Américas

 

Porque ¿quién te distingue? ¿Qué tienes que no recibiste? Y si lo recibiste, ¿por qué te jactas como si no lo hubieras recibido?

 

ILUSTRACIÓN – El difunto Alex Haley, autor de Raíces, tenía en su oficina una fotografía de una tortuga sentada sobre una cerca. La imagen le recordaba una lección que aprendió de joven: «Si ves una tortuga en un poste de la cerca, sabes que recibió ayuda».

 

  1. Porque Dios resiste a los orgullosos, pero es misericordioso con los humildes.

 

Santiago 4:6, 10: Dios se opone a los orgullosos, pero da gracia a los humildes. Humíllense ante el Señor, y él los exaltará.

 

  1. Tenga en cuenta que la confianza que agrada al Señor no es una fe ciega.

 

  1. Es una confianza que se basa en los hechos y dice:

 

“Dios existe, y yo no soy Dios”.

 

Hebreos 11:6, Y sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios, porque es necesario que el que se acerca a Dios crea que él existe y que recompensa a los que lo buscan.

 

  1. Es una confianza que considera el carácter de Dios y declara con seguridad: “Dios es confiable y digno de mi confianza”.

 

Números 23:19, Dios no es hombre para que mienta, ni hijo de hombre para que se arrepienta. ¿Acaso ha dicho algo y no lo hará? ¿Acaso ha hablado y no lo cumplirá?

 

APPL – Si Dios lo dijo, lo hará. Si Dios lo prometió, lo cumplirá, garantizado.

 

  1. Es una confianza que proclama: “Donde está Dios, allí llamaré hogar. ¡La búsqueda ha terminado porque he encontrado mi hogar para siempre!”

 

Salmo 84:1-4, Cómo encantadores son vuestros lugares de residencia, ¡Oh Señor de los ejércitos! Mi alma anhelaba y deseaba estar en los atrios del Señor ; mi corazón y mi carne cantan con alegría al Dios viviente. El ave también halló casa, y la golondrina nido para sí, donde podrá poner sus crías, incluso tus altares, oh Señor de los ejércitos, mi Rey y mi Dios. ¡Cuán bienaventurados son los que habitan en tu casa! Ellos te alaban constantemente.

 

Transición : Ahora que sabemos en quién confiar, a continuación veremos cómo confiar en el versículo 6.

 

  1. Confía en el Señor en todos tus caminos (6) 
  1. Reconócelo en todos tus caminos. 
  1. Esto no es un simple movimiento de la cabeza, como quien dice “que si”.
  2. Debemos ver a Dios en los acontecimientos de la vida. David dijo: «El Señor es mi pastor; nada me faltará» (Salmo 23:1).

 

  1. Esto significa que debemos buscar a Dios diariamente en oración.

 

  1. Entrega tu voluntad diariamente.

 

Lucas 9:23, Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día y sígame.

 

  1. Busca la voluntad de Dios diariamente.

 

Mateo 6:9-10, Padre nuestro que estás en los cielos, ha permitido que tu nombre sea. Venga a nosotros tu reino. Hágase tu voluntad, en la tierra como en el cielo.

 

APPL – ¿Por qué la confianza/fe es tan importante para Dios?

  • Porque las relaciones se basan en la confianza. ¿Conoces alguna relación sana que se haya construido sobre la duda o la sospecha?

 

ILUSTRACIÓN – Memorando de entendimiento entre Estados Unidos e Irán

 

  • Sin confianza, las relaciones se desmoronan.

 

ILUSTRACIÓN: El engaño/tentación de Satanás a Eva y Adán.

 

Génesis 3:4-5, Y la serpiente le dijo a la mujer: «¡No morirán!—respondió la serpiente a la mujer—. 5 Dios sabe que, en cuanto coman del fruto, se les abrirán los ojos y serán como Dios, con el conocimiento del bien y del mal.».

 

APPL – Satanás ha estado acusando a Dios y poniendo en tela de juicio su carácter desde la Caída.

 

  • Satanás sabía que si conseguía que la mentira sobre el carácter de Dios calara, la relación de la humanidad con Dios se fracturaría .
  • Funcionó. Desde entonces, la humanidad ha estado buscando a alguien o algo que no sea Dios en quien confiar.
  • Pero debemos recordar de “quién” estamos hablando.
  • El SEÑOR, Yahvé, es santo, justo, recto, amoroso, misericordioso, fiel y verdadero.
  • Yahvé, el que está comprometido con tu bienestar.

 

Jeremías 29:11-14, “ Porque «Yo sé los planes que tengo para ustedes —declara el Señor—, planes de bienestar y no de calamidad, para darles un futuro y una esperanza. Entonces me invocarán, vendrán y orarán a mí, y yo los escucharé. Me buscarán y me encontrarán cuando me busquen de todo corazón. Me dejaré encontrar por ustedes», declara el Señor.

 

Transición : Ahora que sabemos en quién confiar y cómo confiar, ¿cuál es la promesa para aquellos que confían en el Señor de esta manera?

 

  1. El Señor enderezará tu camino.        
  2. “Él enderezará vuestros caminos.”
  3. Esta es una promesa maravillosa.
  4. Pero también es una promesa condicional basada en la confianza.
  5. ¿Qué significa esta promesa?
  6. Significa que Dios tiene nuestros mejores intereses en el centro de su corazón; Él quiere bendecir nuestras vidas.
  7. Dios sabe cuál es la mejor manera de cumplir su propósito para nuestras vidas.
  8. Todo su poder está disponible para llevar a cabo el plan que tiene para nosotros.
  9. Puede que no sea un camino fácil, pero es la mejor manera de lograr el mejor objetivo.
  10. Y el Señor nos llevará hasta la meta.
  11. Nuestras vidas tendrán éxito según la definición de éxito de Dios.

 

APPL – Dios está comprometido a terminar lo que comenzó en nosotros, a transformarnos para que nos parezcamos más a Cristo.

 

Filipenses 1:6, Porque estoy seguro de esto: que el que comenzó en vosotros la buena obra la perfeccionará hasta el día de Cristo Jesús.

 

 Conclusión

 

APPL – Cuando se trata de confiar en Dios, ¿cuál es tu postura?

  • La decisión es tuya.
  • Puedes estar tan cerca de Dios como quieras.

 

Josué 24:15, Pero en cuanto a mí y a mi casa, serviremos al Señor .
