Believe and Be Set Free
John 19:35 to 20:18
April 4-5, 2026
The meaning and significance of the resurrection begins with one of the simplest, most memorized verses in all the Bible; “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Break that verse down into the sum of its parts and it’s nothing short of amazing.
God saw a world filled with sinners who were estranged and separated from God because of that sin. And how did He respond? With condemnation? No, the very next says, “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through Him.”
God saw a world of sinners that were already condemned because of their sin, He looked at the world of sinners and responded with love. “God loved the world so much… God loved you so much… that He gave His only begotten Son…that whosoever believes would not perish…but have everlasting life.” God doesn’t want you to perish, He wants you to have life …abundant life… everlasting life.
God demonstrated His great love for us. In Romans 5:8, Paul wrote, “God demonstrates His love for us in that Christ died for us while we were yet His enemies.”
When Jesus had died on the cross, two men asked Pontius Pilate the Roman governor for permission to take the body of Jesus from the cross. They were Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. These men were Jewish leaders, Pharisees. They had been secret disciples of Jesus, but secret disciples no more. They risked everything to be identified with Christ.
Perhaps it was at this point, when Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took down the body of Jesus that they concluded that it was over. All their hopes and dreams died there that day when Jesus was crucified. But they would have been wrong.
When Jesus was hanging on the cross, He cried out, “Tetelestai.” “It is finished.” The debt for sin was paid, finished. Paid in full. Condemnation for sin was itself condemned. Death was defeated! Separation from God was finished! Satan’s stronghold was broken! Death was no longer the final word! It was finished!
But it was also a great beginning. Jesus died and declared, “It is finished!” But then He rose again from death to newness of life. Look at the story of the resurrection and you will see the dawning of a new day. The resurrection of Jesus takes place on the first day of the week and He is revealed to them just as the day is dawning. God was doing a new work.
The crucifixion and the resurrection are about transforming death into life. Death was defeated so that death is not the final word. He turns graves into gardens. He turns death into life. He’s the only One who can.
God is still moving; God is still bringing life out of death; He brings victory out of defeat; He brings beauty out of ashes.
How many of you would say, “God has changed my life, once I was blind, but now I see”?
The word ‘resurrection’ literally means ‘to rise again,’ that which was dead can live again. We all have a physical body and these bodies of ours are all going to die. The statistics on death are pretty impressive. I think it’s something like one out of every one is going to die.
But these bodies of ours are just dust –and to dust they will return. But we are more than just physical bodies. We have a soul and spirit. In fact, your soul is the most important aspect of who you are. Your soul is eternal.
If you’re older than 25, your body is already starting to get old, and you’re already headed for the grave. It’s all downhill from there. It just picks up speed as you get older. And the older you get the more you know that’s true. But what about your soul? Your body is destined for the grave, but what about your soul?
I’ve been a pastor a long time and have done many funerals. I’ve done funerals where the person in the casket was more alive than some of the people in the room. Yes, their body was dead, but their soul was very much alive and in the presence of the One who gave life to their soul.
Jesus conquered death so you can live. He came that you might have life and have it to the full. He came to bring life to those who were dead by the shedding of His blood on the cross. The blood of Jesus changes everything.
The cross used to be a symbol of death and suffering. It struck fear in the hearts of those who lived in the days of the Roman Empire. Because of Jesus and what he did for you on the cross that day, even the cross itself has changed its meaning. Today, it’s a symbol of hope. That’s why we put crosses on graves and people wear them as jewelry. It’s a symbol of hope.
Without hope there is no life. I read an article the other day that the rate of suicides among young people has skyrocketed. Why is that? Because they lack hope. Deaths from drug overdose have also skyrocketed. Why? They have nothing to live for; life has lost all meaning. They are empty and have lost their way.
Do you have hope? What do you put your hope in? In the advancement and evolution of man that one day man can build Utopia on earth? In the advancement of technology? In artificial intelligence?
The technology of destruction is advancing as fast as the advancement of those things which are good. Do you put your hope in politicians? You don’t even need to answer that one.
When Jesus rose from the grave, death was defeated. He made a way for sinners to have relationship to God as their Father. He promised that the presence of the living God would be with you, that He would be a rock on which you can build your life.
I. Be Reconciled to God
- Now that death has been defeated, now that death no longer has the final word, God is seeking relationship with you. He is the One who is pursuing; He is the One knocking on the door of our heart.
- God has made a way for sinners to be reconciled to God, so He’s pursuing those sinners with the offer of reconciliation!
- John 3:16; God loves sinners so much that He gave His only begotten Son so that any sinner who believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.
- That’s shocking for some people to hear. Many people believe that God rejects sinners; that He’s against them, that He’s just looking for ways to make their lives miserable because their sin offends Him.
- You know what that is? That is a lie. That’s a lie the enemy uses to keep people away from God. They believe God rejects them, so they reject God.
- Lies only have power if you believe them. Here’s the truth; God loves you so much that He made a way for you to have relationship with Him. God loves you so much that He is pursuing you. Some of you are just one sunrise away from being made right with God.
- Some of you are very near to opening your heart to believe. He’s calling your name. Can you hear His voice?
A. Have confidence in God’s love for you
- Sin has caused a great chasm between sinners and God, and we have plenty of sins to be concerned about.
Illus – Can you imagine if someone followed you around and kept a notebook of everything you’ve ever done or said? The scripture says that everyone will one day give an accounting of their lives for everything they’ve ever done or said: the good, the bad, the ugly …and the shameful.
Revelation 20:12, And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened …and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
- When you stand before the throne on that great day, someone will say, “Open the book.” It could be day of dread and sorrow. But if you are in Christ Jesus, you will say, “Yes, please open the book. I want you to read what written in my book!”
2 Corinthians 5:21, He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Romans 8:1-2, Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… For the Law of the Spirit of life has set you free from the Law of sin and death.
B. You have power to live victoriously
- The power of the resurrection is the same power that is at work in our lives by the Holy Spirit.
- Because He lives again by the power of the resurrection, we will live also.
John 14:18-19 “I will not leave you as orphans … because I live, you will live also.”
Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
- There is a theme that runs through these scriptures, that it is the Holy Spirit of God that lives in us and gives us the power of the resurrected life.
- Another scripture says, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.” When these things fill the heart, the soul is satisfied.
Illus – You still must decide, however, that you will eat at His banqueting table. Some people insist on “comfort food” that seems good to the taste but feels bad later. They are trying to medicate their pain. But short-term medicine becomes long-term poison. But God speaks a better word. He offers a glory that doesn’t fade.
II. Believe and Have Life in His Name
John 20:31, These things have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may life in His name.
- Jesus said, “I have come that you may have life, and have it abundantly.” John 10:10
- That is one of the greatest promises of the gospel …everlasting life … and life right now.
- God is at work transforming that which is from the old life into that which is new in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17, If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
- Can the nature of a man change? Is it possible to have newness of life?
Illus – We used to have a pet rabbit that loved to sit on my shoulder and read books. We had a dog that our girls used to dress up and speak to like a person. But can a rabbit read books, can a dog speak like a person? No, a rabbit is a rabbit, a dog is a dog, a horse is a horse… But you can be changed!
- Hearts can be changed; lives can be changed. How? Because you can see what you have never seen before, you can hear what you have never heard before, you can understand what you have never understood before. God is still transforming lives today!
A. Death no longer has the final word
- Jesus has power and authority over death. He defeated death so that it no longer has the final word.
John 10:17-18, “I lay down My life so that I may take it again. No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay down on my own accord. I have authority to lay down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”
Illus – Power and authority. We’re fascinated by things that have power. When someone lifts a lot of weight at the gym, we want to know how much. Iran is trying to convince the world they have power. But there is a power so great, no one can defeat its power – the grave. No, wait. There is One who can defeat its power. His name is Jesus-He’s the only One who can.
- But for those who are in Christ, death is not the end, it is a beginning.
Illus – Our bodies may be in the process of dying… but our souls are in the process of living.
2 Corinthians 4:16, Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
- By conquering death, He changes our entire outlook. It’s not the end; it’s a glorious beginning!
B. We have new life even now
- In Christ, we have eternal life, and that new life begins now! How? He gives you the Spirit of life!
- Look at it from two extremes. Imagine the contrast from what you used to be in the world to what you will be when you are living eternally in the presence of God in heaven. What a glorious day that will be!
- There is an amazing transformation to get from one extreme to the other. Does it happen all at once the moment we leave this earthly life?
- No, that transformation begins now.
- As you draw nearer to the Lord, you become more like Him. Your soul becomes alive! He pours His Word into our soul, and He pours His Spirit into our soul — and the result is life even now.
John 8:31-32, 37, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free… if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.”
Illus – I was raised by an alcoholic, angry, cantankerous father. I am now healed by a heavenly father who loves me like no earthly father ever could. I have been transformed by His great love!
- Some of you are one sunrise away from having your life turned around.
- He knocks on the door of your heart and calls out your name because God loves you and wants you to have a relationship with Him as your Father.
- He takes the soul that is dead, discouraged, downhearted and defeated and brings newness of life.
- If you were to die tonight, would you be ready to meet God? You can have the assurance that you are right with God when you receive Him as Lord and Savior and ask Him to forgive your sin.
- Are you ready to meet the Lord? What if He came back tonight, would you be ready?
John 19:35-20:17 NASB
35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “not a bone of him shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “they shall look on him whom they pierced.”

El significado y la importancia de la resurrección comienzan con uno de los versículos más sencillos y memorizados de toda la Biblia: «Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna». Si analizamos ese verso en su conjunto, vemos que es sencillamente asombroso.
Dios vio un mundo lleno de pecadores que se habían alejado de Él a causa del pecado. ¿Y cómo Jesús respondió? ¿Con condenación? No, a continuación dice: «Dios no envió a su Hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para que el mundo sea salvo por medio de él».
Dios vio un mundo de pecadores que ya estaban condenados por su pecado; miró a ese mundo de pecadores y respondió con amor. «Dios amó tanto al mundo… Dios te amó tanto… que dio a su Hijo unigénito… para que todo aquel que cree no se pierda… sino que tenga vida eterna». Dios no quiere que perezcas, quiere que tengas vida… vida abundante… vida eterna.
Dios demostró su gran amor por nosotros. En Romanos 5:8, Pablo escribió: «Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros en que Cristo murió por nosotros cuando aún éramos sus enemigos».
Cuando Jesús murió en la cruz, dos hombres pidieron permiso a Poncio Pilato, el gobernador romano, para bajar su cuerpo. Eran José de Arimatea y Nicodemo. Estos hombres eran líderes judíos, fariseos. Habían sido discípulos secretos de Jesús, pero ya no lo eran. Arriesgaron todo por identificarse con Cristo.
Quizás fue en ese momento, cuando José de Arimatea y Nicodemo bajaron el cuerpo de Jesús, que concluyeron que todo había terminado. Todas sus esperanzas y sueños murieron allí, aquel día en que Jesús fue crucificado. Pero se equivocaron.
Cuando Jesús estaba colgado en la cruz, exclamó: « Tetelestai ». «Consumado es». La deuda por el pecado fue pagada, saldada. Pagada por completo. La condenación por el pecado fue condenada. ¡La muerte fue vencida! ¡ La separación de Dios fue acabada! ¡ El dominio de Satanás fue destruido! ¡ La muerte ya no tenía la última palabra! ¡Todo estaba consumado!
Pero también fue un gran comienzo. Jesús murió y declaró: «¡Consumado es!». Luego resucitó de entre los muertos a una vida nueva. Observa la historia de la resurrección y verás el amanecer de un nuevo día. La resurrección de Jesús tiene lugar el primer día de la semana y se les revela justo al amanecer. Dios estaba realizando una nueva obra.
La crucifixión y la resurrección tratan sobre la transformación de la muerte en vida. La muerte fue vencida para que no tenga la última palabra. Él convierte las tumbas en jardines. Él convierte la muerte en vida. Él es el único que puede hacerlo.
Dios sigue obrando; Dios sigue sacando vida de la muerte; Él saca victoria de la derrota; Él saca belleza de las cenizas.
¿Cuántos de ustedes dirían: “Dios ha cambiado mi vida, antes era ciego, pero ahora veo”?
La palabra «resurrección» significa literalmente «volver a levantarse», aquello que estaba muerto puede volver a vivir. Todos tenemos un cuerpo físico y todos vamos a morir. Las estadísticas sobre la mortalidad son bastante impresionantes . Creo que aproximadamente una de cada persona va a morir.
Pero nuestros cuerpos no son más que polvo, y al polvo volverán. Sin embargo, somos más que cuerpos físicos. Tenemos alma y espíritu. De hecho, tu alma es el aspecto más importante de quién eres. Tu alma es eterna.
Si tienes más de 25 años, tu cuerpo ya empieza a envejecer y ya vas de camino hacia la tumba. A partir de ahí, todo va cuesta abajo. El proceso se acelera a medida que envejeces. Y cuanto mayor te haces, más te das cuenta de que es cierto. ¿Pero qué pasa con tu alma? Tu cuerpo está destinado a la tumba, ¿pero qué hay de tu alma?
He sido pastor durante mucho tiempo y he oficiado muchos funerales. He oficiado funerales donde la persona en el ataúd estaba más viva que algunas de las personas presentes. Sí, su cuerpo estaba muerto, pero su alma estaba muy viva y en la presencia de Aquel que le dio vida.
Jesús venció a la muerte para que tú puedas vivir. Él vino para que tengas vida, y la tengas en abundancia. Vino a dar vida a los que estaban muertos mediante el derramamiento de su sangre en la cruz. La sangre de Jesús lo cambia todo.
La cruz solía ser un símbolo de muerte y sufrimiento. Infundía temor en los corazones de quienes vivían en la época del Imperio Romano. Gracias a Jesús y a lo que hizo por ti en la cruz aquel día, incluso la cruz misma ha cambiado su significado. Hoy es un símbolo de esperanza. Por eso colocamos cruces en las tumbas y la gente las usa como joyas. Es un símbolo de esperanza.
Sin esperanza no hay vida. El otro día leí un artículo que decía que la tasa de suicidios entre los jóvenes ha aumentado mucho. ¿Por qué? Porque les falta esperanza. Las muertes por sobredosis de drogas también ha aumentado. ¿Por qué? Porque no tienen nada por lo que vivir; la vida ha perdido todo sentido. Están vacíos y han perdido el rumbo.
¿Tienes esperanza? ¿En qué depositas tu esperanza? ¿En el progreso y la evolución del ser humano para que algún día pueda construir una utopía en la Tierra? ¿ En el avance de la tecnología? ¿En la inteligencia artificial?
La tecnología de la destrucción avanza tan rápido como el progreso de las cosas buenas. ¿Depositas tu esperanza en los políticos? Ni siquiera necesitas responder a esa pregunta.
Cuando Jesús resucitó, la muerte fue vencida. Él abrió el camino para que los pecadores tuvieran una relación con Dios como su Padre. Prometió que la presencia del Dios vivo estaría con nosotros, que Él sería la roca sobre la cual podríamos edificar nuestra vida.
- Reconcíliate con Dios
- Ahora que la muerte ha sido vencida, ahora que la muerte ya no tiene la última palabra, Dios busca tener una relación contigo. Él es quien te busca; Él es quien llama a la puerta de nuestro corazón.
- Dios ha provisto un camino para que los pecadores se reconcilien con Él, ¡así que los busca ofreciéndoles la reconciliación!
- Juan 3:16; Dios ama tanto a los pecadores que dio a su Hijo unigénito para que todo pecador que crea en él no perezca, sino que tenga vida eterna.
- Para algunas personas, escuchar eso resulta chocante. Muchos creen que Dios rechaza a los pecadores; que está en contra de ellos, que solo busca maneras de hacerles la vida imposible porque su pecado le ofende.
- ¿Sabes lo que es eso? Es una mentira. Es una mentira que el enemigo usa para alejar a la gente de Dios. Creen que Dios los rechaza, así que ellos también lo rechazan.
- Las mentiras solo tienen poder si las crees. Esta es la verdad: Dios te ama tanto que te ha dado la oportunidad de tener una relación con Él. Dios te ama tanto que te busca. Algunos de ustedes están a solo un amanecer de reconciliarse con Dios.
- Algunos de ustedes están muy cerca de abrir su corazón a la fe. Él los está llamando. ¿Pueden oír su voz?
- Ten confianza en el amor de Dios por ti.
- El pecado ha provocado una gran brecha entre los pecadores y Dios, y tenemos muchos pecados de los que preocuparnos.
Ilustración: ¿Te imaginas si alguien te siguiera y anotara todo lo que has hecho o dicho? Las Escrituras dicen que todos rendiremos cuentas de nuestra vida por todo lo que hemos hecho o dicho: lo bueno, lo malo, lo feo… y lo vergonzoso.
Apocalipsis 20:12, Y vi a los muertos, grandes y pequeños, de pie ante el trono, y se abrieron los libros … y los muertos fueron juzgados por las cosas que estaban escritas en los libros, según sus obras.
- Cuando estés ante el trono en aquel gran día, alguien te dirá: «Abre el libro». Podría ser un día de temor y tristeza. Pero si estás en Cristo Jesús, dirás: «Sí, por favor, abre el libro. ¡Quiero que leas lo que está escrito en mi libro!».
2 Corintios 5:21, Al que no conoció pecado, por nosotros lo hizo pecado, para que nosotros fuéramos hechos justicia de Dios en él.
Romanos 8:1-2, Por lo tanto, ahora no hay condenación para los que están en Cristo Jesús… Porque la ley del Espíritu de vida os ha librado de la ley del pecado y de la muerte.
- Tienes el poder de vivir victoriosamente
- El poder de la resurrección es el mismo poder que obra en nuestras vidas por medio del Espíritu Santo.
- Porque Él vuelve a vivir por el poder de la resurrección, nosotros también viviremos.
Juan 14:18-19 “No los dejaré huérfanos… porque yo vivo, ustedes también vivirán.”
Romanos 8:11, Pero si el Espíritu de aquel que resucitó a Jesús de entre los muertos mora en vosotros, el que resucitó a Cristo Jesús de entre los muertos también dará vida a vuestros cuerpos mortales por medio de su Espíritu que mora en vosotros.
Hay un tema recurrente en estas escrituras: que es el Espíritu Santo de Dios quien vive en nosotros y nos da el poder de la vida resucitada.
- Otro pasaje bíblico dice: «El gozo del Señor es mi fortaleza». Cuando estas cosas llenan el corazón, el alma se siente plena.
Ilustración: Aún debes decidir si te sentarás a su mesa de banquete. Algunos insisten en la comida reconfortante, que les sienta bien al paladar pero les sienta mal después. Intentan aliviar su dolor. Pero la medicina a corto plazo se convierte en veneno a largo plazo. Sin embargo, Dios tiene un mensaje mejor. Ofrece una gloria que perdura.
II . Cree y ten vida en su nombre.
Juan 20:31, Estas cosas se han escrito para que creáis que Jesús es el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, y para que, creyendo, vivís en su nombre.
- Jesús dijo: «Yo he venido para que tengan vida, y la tengan en abundancia». Juan 10:10
- Esa es una de las mayores promesas del evangelio… la vida eterna… y la vida ahora mismo.
- Dios está obrando para transformar lo que es de la vida antigua en lo que es nuevo en Cristo.
2 Corintios 5:17 Si alguno está en Cristo, nueva criatura es; las cosas viejas pasaron; he aquí, todas son hechas nuevas.
- ¿Puede cambiar la naturaleza del hombre? ¿Es posible experimentar una nueva vida?
Ilustración: Teníamos un conejo de mascota al que le encantaba sentarse en mi hombro y leer libros. Teníamos un perro al que nuestras hijas vestían y le hablaban como a una persona. Pero , ¿ puede un conejo leer libros? ¿Puede un perro hablar como una persona? No, un conejo es un conejo, un perro es un perro, un caballo es un caballo… ¡Pero puedes cambiar!
- Los corazones pueden cambiar; las vidas pueden cambiar. ¿Cómo? Porque puedes ver lo que nunca antes habías visto, puedes oír lo que nunca antes habías oído, puedes comprender lo que nunca antes habías comprendido. ¡Dios sigue transformando vidas hoy!
- La muerte ya no tiene la última palabra.
- Jesús tiene poder y autoridad sobre la muerte. La venció, de modo que ya no tiene la última palabra.
Juan 10:17-18: «Yo doy mi vida para volver a tomarla. Nadie me la ha quitado, sino que yo la doy por mi propia voluntad. Tengo autoridad para darla y tengo autoridad para volver a tomarla. Este mandamiento lo recibí de mi Padre».
Ilustración: Poder y autoridad. Nos fascinan las cosas que tienen poder. Cuando alguien levanta mucho peso en el gimnasio, queremos saber cuánto. Irán intenta convencer al mundo de que tiene poder. Pero hay un poder tan grande que nadie puede vencerlo: la tumba. No, espera. Hay Alguien que puede vencer su poder. Su nombre es Jesús; Él es el único que puede.
- Pero para quienes están en Cristo, la muerte no es el final, sino un comienzo.
Ilustración: Nuestros cuerpos pueden estar en proceso de morir… pero nuestras almas están en proceso de vivir.
2 Corintios 4:16, Por tanto, no nos desanimamos; antes bien, aunque nuestro hombre exterior se va desgastando, nuestro hombre interior se renueva día tras día.
- Al vencer a la muerte, Él transforma por completo nuestra perspectiva. No es el final; ¡es un comienzo glorioso!
- Tenemos una nueva vida incluso ahora.
- En Cristo tenemos vida eterna, ¡y esa nueva vida comienza ahora! ¿Cómo? ¡Él te da el Espíritu de vida!
- Míralo desde dos perspectivas extremas. Imagina el contraste entre lo que eras en este mundo y lo que serás cuando vivas eternamente en la presencia de Dios en el cielo. ¡Qué día tan glorioso será!
- Se produce una transformación asombrosa al pasar de un extremo al otro. ¿Sucede todo de golpe en el momento en que dejamos esta vida terrenal?
- No, esa transformación comienza ahora.
- A medida que te acercas al Señor, te vuelves más semejante a Él. ¡Tu alma cobra vida! Él derrama su Palabra en nuestra alma y derrama su Espíritu en ella, y el resultado es vida incluso ahora.
Juan 8:31-32, 37, “Si permanecen en mi palabra, serán verdaderamente mis discípulos; y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres… si el Hijo los libera, serán verdaderamente libres.”
Ilustración: Me crié con un padre alcohólico, iracundo y cascarrabias. Ahora estoy sanado por un Padre celestial que me ama como ningún padre terrenal jamás podría. ¡He sido transformado por su gran amor!
- Algunos de ustedes están a un amanecer de que tu vida dé un giro de 180 grados, estás a solo un amanecer de distancia.
- Él llama a la puerta de tu corazón y pronuncia tu nombre porque Dios te ama y quiere que tengas una relación con Él como tu Padre.
- Él toma el alma muerta, desanimada, abatida y derrotada, y le trae una nueva vida .
